By making the ten aspects as cause and condition, having accumulated the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, in the future, those that are not fully ripened will also become fully ripened. Here, "fully ripened" does not refer to the continuous practice of the five things that are said to be fully ripened by perfecting the meditation in each place. Or, benefiting others is to be fully ripened. Furthermore, "based on that" and so on, are to show the manifest faith, there are two ways: extensively explaining the manifest faith, and concluding in order to explain the power of the manifest faith. Before that, the manifest faith has been extensively shown, so it should be understood that this is the second general conclusion, which is the concluding statement. If sentient beings have not accumulated vast accumulations of merit and wisdom, and are not upright and do not possess the nature of uprightness, although they possess the power of discernment and elimination, but because they abide in holding their own views as supreme, from here onwards is the third, showing the individual who, even though manifest faith arises, still clings to the words. This is also shown in two ways: showing the examination of emptiness, and distinguishing the examination of the students. The first is also divided into two: in relation to the former, distinguishing the differences, and showing the clinging to the literal meaning of the words, this is the first. This sutra passage is also divided into several ways to show: showing having and not having the five things, showing upright and not upright, showing having and not having power, showing abiding and not abiding in one's own views. Among them, "if sentient beings" and so on, there are four explanations for these sutra passages. Some say that here only those who lack the five things are taken, therefore, in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* it is said: "From not generating roots of virtue, up to not perfectly accomplishing merit and wisdom." The difference with the fourth is that this is generating manifest faith in the Dharma, but not having faith in the meaning, while the fourth is generating manifest

It is because they do not believe. Some say that here, in summary, there are only three types of individuals: the first is one who possesses the first but lacks the fourth; the second is one who possesses the first two but lacks the third; and the third is one who possesses the first three but lacks the second. Some say that here there are only four types of individuals: in addition to the first three, one adds one who possesses the first four but lacks the first. The second has a distinction, which is that the individual shown from the second is of a straight nature, while this third individual is not of a straight nature. Some say that here there are only five types of individuals: in addition to the first four, one adds one who lacks the fifth. The distinction between the second and fourth should be explained as before. Although there are four such explanations, the fourth is correct because it agrees with the definition of the words. "Because they abide in holding their own view as supreme" means that they do not seek the Great Vehicle of definitive meaning, but are always attached to the literal meaning, because they do not understand. Therefore, the treatise *Asaṅga's Compendium of Manifestations* says: Why is it that some sentient beings, although they are devoted to the very extensive, do not necessarily become liberated? It is said: Because they abide in holding their own view as supreme, and because they are always attached to the literal meaning of things. For those, abiding in holding their own view as supreme means that they do not seek the sutras of definitive meaning. Always being attached to the literal meaning means that they always hold on to the sutras of provisional meaning. For example, some, having heard the words "all dharmas are ultimately without self-nature," regard all dharmas as also lacking the characteristic of essence and slander them. They are also attached to other sutras of provisional meaning, and holding on to the meaning literally is the same. Therefore, even if they are devoted to the Great Vehicle, they will not be liberated, because the Great Vehicle sutras are spoken with various intentions. After hearing that Dharma, they also...
