It is called the Luminous Ground. Therefore, in its own verses, it says: 'Wisdom is clear and the view of emptiness is unobstructed, the king of the gods. In many Buddha-fields, he shows his own body and guides sentient beings.' Thus it is said. In the Noble Golden Light Sutra, it says: 'The immeasurable samadhi of the light of wisdom is immovable, and nothing can suppress it, and because it is based on the dharani of hearing, it is called the Luminous Ground.' In the Noble Ten Bhumi Sutra, it says: 'Because the three roots of virtue, such as the absence of desire and hatred, become increasingly clear and completely pure, it is called the Luminous Ground.' In the Noble Buddhavatamsaka Sutra, the ten abodes are taught, and in the Good Morality Sutra as well, it mostly shows accordance with what is said in the Noble Ten Bhumi Sutra. In the treatise Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it says: 'Because samadhi and equanimity become a place without degeneration, and because it becomes a place of great Dharma manifestation, it is called the Luminous Ground.' In the commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle by Master Vasubandhu, it says: 'In this ground, samadhi and equanimity are constantly inseparable and without degeneration, and because it manifests the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, it is called the Luminous Ground.' The extensive explanation is as taught in the commentary by Master Asanga. The treatise Exposition says: 'Having obtained the aggregate of extremely pure samadhi, the manifestation of great wisdom is transformed, so it is called the Luminous Ground. Having accomplished the supreme samadhi and the dharani of great qualities, because the light of supreme wisdom is immeasurable, it is also called the Luminous Ground.' In the commentary on the Noble Prajnaparamita, it is called the Ground with Light. Because those who have obtained the dharmas of the aspects of enlightenment are like the light of the fire of wisdom that burns afflictions, therefore the fourth is called the Radiant One, which is the explanation of the fourth, the Radiant One.

Therefore, it is called the Luminous Ground because the light of the wisdom of the Dharma of the path to enlightenment burns the tree of afflictions. In the Sutra of Complete Liberation of Boundaries and the Sutra of Profound Meaning of Complete Liberation, it is also explained in accordance with what is said in this very Sutra. In the Sutra Requested by the Noble Human King, the term "Luminous Ground" also appears. Therefore, in the verses of that very Sutra, it is said: "Wisdom shines forth, appearing sublime, with great diligence, the king of the gods of Tushita, travels through many realms." In the Noble Golden Light Sutra, it is said: "It pacifies afflictions, increases light with the fire of wisdom, and is a place for cultivating the path to enlightenment, therefore it is called the Luminous Ground." In the Noble Ten Grounds Sutra, it is said: "It constantly emits the light of wisdom, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, similar to those that cannot be taken away by others, therefore it is called the Luminous Ground." In the Chapter on the Ten Abodes from within the Noble Buddha Avatamsaka Sutra, it is also taught in that way. In the commentary on the Noble Ten Grounds Sutra, it is said: "It is called the Luminous Ground because the tree of unforgotten afflictions is burned by the fire of wisdom." Among them, what is called unforgotten refers to the co-emergent afflictions that naturally and continuously arise, therefore it is called unforgotten. In the Ornament of the Sutras, it is said: Whatever wisdom is on the path to enlightenment, its nature is light. The two obscurations, afflictions and knowledge, their nature is trees. The Bodhisattva of this ground generates the light of wisdom and burns the trees of the two obscurations, therefore it is called the Luminous Ground. In the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it is said: Because all obscurations are burned by the Dharmas of the path to enlightenment, it is called the Luminous Ground. In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it is said: On this ground, the particularly excellent Dharma of the path to enlightenment abides, and by the power of this ground, all root afflictions and secondary afflictions are burned and reduced to ashes, therefore it is called the Luminous Ground of Wisdom.
