In the realm of the Buddhas, these eight qualities are the most supreme and excellent, and should be understood as such. It is said in the scriptures that from that limb onwards, the second limb becomes complete. The eight purities will be explained later. Volume Fifty-three. Because it is impossible to obtain worldly samadhi, complete attainment, and complete hearing dharani, therefore, due to these causes and conditions, that limb is not complete, and so on, which shows the third limb. This also has two aspects: one is to show that the later conduct of the third ground is not complete, and the other is that one's own limb is complete but cannot be obtained. Therefore, it is called "samadhi" because it is free from sinking and agitation, so it is called samadhi. Furthermore, it is also called one-pointed samadhi. It is called "attainment" because it reaches the ultimate state of being free from sinking and agitation, just like this, because it is the ultimate place of complete tranquility and stability, so it is called attainment. These two aspects are called worldly because they are with outflows and will enter. If these names of samadhi are combined with the explanation of the *Yogacarabhumi-sastra*, there are also three kinds of names, namely: *samahita*, samadhi, and *samapatti*. Therefore, in that explanation, "*samahita* ground" refers to: the ultimate of samadhi, because it becomes equal by being free from sinking and agitation, or merges into equality, or is born from equality, so it is called *samahita* ground. Some say that this name includes all samadhi associated with mind, because all of these become equal and the qualities are integrated. It does not include the mindless, as shown in the previous verse, because it is together with samadhi. It is called "samadhi" because it is one of the numbers of mental dharmas arising from the determination of each object, and mindless samadhi cannot lead the qualities, so it is the *samahita* ground. If so, why

If asked, what is the "Ground of Equipoise"? The Ground of Equipoise, if briefly summarized, has four aspects: meditative absorption, liberation, concentration, and attainment. Among these, the so-called four meditative absorptions refer to the four meditative absorptions. The so-called liberation refers to the eight liberations. The so-called concentration refers to the concentration on emptiness, the concentration on wishlessness, and the concentration on signlessness. Attainment refers to the attainment of the five contemplations. Among these, the attainment of the five contemplations refers to individually contemplating the impurity of the inner body, and individually contemplating the skeleton, considering that consciousness operates within it; individually contemplating the skeleton, considering that consciousness exists within it both now and in the future; individually contemplating the skeleton, considering that although consciousness operates within it, it does not exist in the present, but only exists in the future; individually contemplating the skeleton, considering that although consciousness operates within it, it exists neither in the present nor in the future. In detail, it is as explained in the Great Commentary on Distinctions. In the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra" (Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice) it also says: "There are the attainment of the eight abhibhāyatanas (spheres of mastery), the attainment of the ten kasinas (totality spheres), the attainment of the formless realms, the attainment of non-perception, and the attainment of cessation." Therefore, there is no fault in this. Because the attainment of non-mind is a fault of equipoise, it is not a correct equipoise. Some say that this name is the nature of concentration that exists in both the state of having mind and the state of not having mind, and any state that transforms into the equality of having mind is for the purpose of guiding merits, and also for guiding the power of equality, and it is also largely the same, and because it is free from sinking and agitation, and also for guiding the practice of equality such as non-regret, it is called equipoise. Any concentration without mind is a difference in merit.

Although one cannot bring forth an excellent image, bringing forth the Lord of Equality is largely similar, and because it is produced by the samadhi of equality. Therefore, that is also called equipoise. If that is the case, why is there no fault in saying "together with samadhi" in the previous verse? Because the word "having" in the verse is hidden, the phrase "together with it" is mentioned. In reality, equipoise is not even "together," because it shows the absence of mind that does not belong to equipoise. In the true sense, the name of the ground of equipoise also belongs to complete inclusion, and also belongs to non-abandonment, because it includes both the state of having mind and not having mind, so it is called belonging to complete inclusion. Furthermore, in order to show that the absence of perception and the cessation attainment are also the nature of the ground of equipoise, it is said for the distinguished samadhi with outflows and without outflows, but not for all distracted minds such as the desire realm, so it is called non-abandonment. Why are dhyana and so on called the ground of equipoise, but not the one-pointed mind of the desire realm? Because that samadhi is accomplished by absence of regret, supreme joy, joy, extreme pliancy, and bliss, but it is not so when practicing in the desire realm. If combined with this, then the distracted mind of the upper realms is also not equipoise, because it is the same as the desire realm. Then there arise four mutually dependent possibilities: there is being together with samadhi, but it is not the mind of equipoise. For example, in the state of distracted mind such as the desire realm, the mind and mental factors that are associated with samadhi. There is the ground of equipoise, but it is not together with samadhi, for example, in the state of entering into absorption, the nature of samadhi and the dharmas that exist in the state of non-perceptual absorption. There is also being together with samadhi.
