It is said that the place where the roots are successively located is called the ground. In the commentary on the Mahāyānasaṃgraha by Master Asaṅga, it is said that the state of knowing the selflessness of dharmas is called the ground. In the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra, it is said that it is called the ground because it collects and holds nirvāṇa. Some say that two kinds of meanings are called the ground. As it is said in the Sutra of Past Actions: The Buddha-bhūmi holds countless hundreds of thousands of qualities, so it is called birth. It is called the ground because it makes all causes and effects manifest and accomplished. Like that is said. In the Vijñāptimātratāsiddhi-śāstra, it is said that it is called the ground because it is the place of yogis, the most excellent of complete holding, and the cause of birth and growth. That is, because it is a place, it is called birth. Because it is complete holding, it is called growth. Some say that there are three kinds of meanings called the ground. As it is said in the commentary on the Noble Buddha-bhūmi-sūtra: The ground is like this: whatever is a place, an activity, and a collection. Therefore, the tathāgatagarbha and the four wisdoms are enjoyment, and things such as the sameness of intention are the place, activity, and collection of the Buddha, so it is called the Buddha-bhūmi. Among them, the place is the tathāgatagarbha. The activity is the four wisdoms, because it has activity. The collection is the consciousness and mental factors that correspond to the four wisdoms. Some say that there are four kinds of meanings called the ground. As it is said in the commentary on the Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra: The ground means the object of experience, the place, the activity, and the collection. Because it is the object of experience of yogis, it is called the ground. For example, just like a horse's tether, it does not go to other places. Or, because yogis rely on this place, their own dharma will grow and increase, so it is called the ground. For example, like crops

It is similar to the earth because it is the basis of those. Or, because it manifests by relying on the conduct of wisdom contained in the place of yogic practice, and because it grows by relying on this, it is called "ground," like the source of jewels. Or, because yogis practice here and experience the enjoyment of their own Dharma, it is called "ground," like a cow, it is the basis of those, as it appears in the scriptures, and the detailed explanation is as shown there. Extensive distinctions can be understood from the Ornament of the Sutras, the translation of Lang-ge Tsé of the Commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, the commentary on the Holy Buddha-bhūmi, and so on. Teachings that are different in this way, like worldly land, are called "ground" because they have the meanings mentioned above, and are named from metaphors. The Indian word for this is Paramita, which translates as "gone beyond," because it is called "gone beyond" because it goes from this shore of samsara to the other shore of nirvana by the power of generosity and so on. Because this chapter extensively shows the ground and the perfections, it is called the "Chapter on the Ground and the Perfections." Regarding the intention of the order, it is also the same in the incomparable conduct, where two meanings have been shown above: the showing of shamatha and vipassana, and the showing of the ground and the perfections. Above that, shamatha and vipassana have been shown, and below this, the second gate of the ground and the perfections is shown. Like this, there are two gates of yogic meditation: the first is to generate vipassana by abiding in shamatha and the perfections, which is the gate of the general characteristic, and therefore it has been shown before. The second is to generate the perfections by relying on the ground, which is the gate of the specific characteristic, and therefore it has been shown later. Or, because shamatha and vipassana are concise, they have been shown before, and generating the perfections by relying on karma is extensive, so it has been shown later. The intention of the order has been explained.
