From the section on the explanation of the grounds, it is taught that the conduct of benefiting sentient beings is precisely that. Thus, these four objects of gathering are for the purpose of benefiting sentient beings. Furthermore, it appears in that very text that among the ways of benefiting others, there is the conduct of benefiting others. In broad terms, it should be understood as it is taught in the treatise "The Grounds of Yoga Practice." The so-called "characteristic of true knowledge" or "characteristic of suchness" refers to the explanation of the characteristic of true wisdom and suchness. Alternatively, here, there is a thorough differentiation of five aspects of characteristics, namely, characteristic is name, reason, conceptualization, true wisdom, and suchness. Because it is made to be dominated by the principal, here, for the time being, the second characteristic is taught. The extensive differentiation of the five characteristics, such as name, should be understood as it is taught in the treatise "The Grounds of Yoga Practice." Cognition is established by thinking well, while characteristics are what eliminate. In the state of forbearance and the supreme worldly dharma, by meditating on the four correct contemplations as they are, one is well-established in suchness. Furthermore, the consciousness that apprehends through internal correct attention also eliminates. The extensive explanation of those characteristics is as previously taught. Although there are two explanations, here, for the time being, the explanation is taught in conjunction with the latter explanation. Because he has correctly contemplated suchness, if one can also remain neutral from all the subtle characteristics of the mind that universally arise, then what need is there to even mention looking at the coarse characteristics? And so forth, this is the second elimination of characteristics. This is also divided into two aspects: the teaching of elimination itself, and from "because he dwells extensively in those practices" onward, the teaching of skillfully training the mind. The first is also of three types: a brief teaching of the elimination of characteristics, from "son of good family" onward, the teaching of the characteristics to be completely eliminated, and from "those that universally arise" onward, the correct teaching of elimination itself. This is the first. Thus, that Bodhisattva who abides in the practice, he

Because of relying on the seven kinds of correct mental activities, the mind that can separately understand, even the subtle aspects of the mind's grasping, etc., can be completely abandoned. What need is there to mention the gross aspects? This is the concluding statement. Among them, the gross aspects refer to the aspects that are grasped when showing a state of distraction. Or it refers to all the aspects of the arising of afflictions. Or it refers to the aspects of the lower realms of the desire realm. Therefore, in the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra," it says, "What are the gross aspects?" The answer is, "It is the gross aspects that see the lower realms as gross." Son, the subtle aspects are like this: the aspect of the mind's grasping, or the aspect of feeling, or the aspect of being able to distinguish, or the aspect of affliction and purification, etc. This is to show the second kind of aspect that should be abandoned. There are twenty-one aspects that should be abandoned, which can also be summarized into eleven kinds to show. This is the first to show the four aspects of grasping, etc., which are sequentially related to the objects of the four mindfulnesses of body, feeling, mind, and phenomena. That is to say, relying on grasping, what appears as an image is the subtle aspect. The rest should be understood in the same way. The aspects of suffering and origin, cessation and path, this is the fifth to show the aspects of the four truths. In the "Mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra," it says, "What are the characteristics of suffering and origin, cessation and path, respectively?" The answer is, "The venerable Citra said, 'What is extremely decaying is the characteristic of suffering, what produces and increases is the characteristic of origin, what is completely pacified is the characteristic of cessation, and what definitely leads to liberation is the characteristic of the path.'" It should be understood as it is explained in detail in four ways therein. The aspect of conditioned phenomena or the aspect of unconditioned phenomena, this is the sixth unconditioned
