In the commentary on the Abhisamayalankara, it says, "Subtle signs arise universally." In the Vijnaptimatratasiddhi, it also states, "The obscuration of subtle signs arising universally." The Samdhinirmocana Sutra speaks of "the fault of subtle signs arising universally," and this very sutra mentions "the obscuration of subtle signs arising universally," which is a name given based on the form of signs, and it is a collection of two types of universal ignorance. Therefore, there is no contradiction between them, and it should be understood as before. Furthermore, the explanation of the definitive words is also an explanation that makes all of these the domain of the master, and it should be understood as before. The eighth bhumi is the antidote to the obscuration of effort towards the signless and the lack of mastery over the signed, which is the presentation of the obscuration of the eighth bhumi. In this way, from the co-emergent aspect of the obscuration of knowledge, the meditation on the signless by one aspect does not arise naturally, and it also includes two types of universal ignorance, namely the universal ignorance of effort towards the signless and the universal ignorance of the lack of mastery over the signed. Therefore, in the Vijnaptimatratasiddhi, it says: The obscuration of effort towards the signless on the eighth bhumi is like this: from the co-emergent aspect of the obscuration of knowledge, that which does not naturally arise from meditating on the signless by one aspect. In the first five bhumis, yoga with signs is abundant, and yoga without signs is rare. In the sixth bhumi, yoga with signs is rare, and yoga without signs is abundant. In the seventh bhumi, the yoga without signs is continuously manifest, but it still involves effort. In this way, because there is effort towards the signless, it cannot naturally show signs and realms, and from here until the extensive explanation, this is what is being explained. In the commentary on the Arya-Dashabhumika-Sutra, it appears as "the obscuration of effort towards the signless," and in the commentary on the Mahayana-samgraha, translated in the time of Lang, it says, "the manifest activity of the signless," and in the treatise

In the treatises of the Vijñānavāda school, the "obstacle of exertion in the absence of characteristics" is summarized as one kind of parikalpita, namely, the parikalpita of exertion in the absence of characteristics. In the treatise *Thirty Verses on Consciousness-Only*, only one name is mentioned, but in fact, it summarizes two kinds of parikalpita, namely, the parikalpita of exertion in the absence of characteristics, and the parikalpita of not being able to be independent with respect to characteristics. The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* says, "It becomes the antidote to entering without effort and spontaneously in the absence of characteristics." There are two explanations for this: Some say that the practice of the wisdom of the eighth bhūmi bodhisattva, which is without effort and spontaneously enters, is obscured by this, so it is said, "entering without effort and spontaneously in the absence of characteristics." Among these two explanations, it is only the parikalpita of exertion in the absence of characteristics. Some say that the sūtra is also consistent with the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra*, and simultaneously mentions two kinds of parikalpita. Among them, the first mentioned "practice of the absence of characteristics" refers to the parikalpita of exertion in the absence of characteristics. Secondly, the mentioned "fault of spontaneous entry" refers to the parikalpita of not being able to be independent in the presence of characteristics. This one obstacle completely summarizes the two kinds of parikalpita, and should be understood as stated in the sūtra. Regarding the explanation of determining the meaning of words, in the commentary on the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* by Vasubandhu (translated by Xuanzang) and the commentary by Ācārya Sthiramati, and in the *Thirty Verses on Consciousness-Only*, the "obstacle of exertion in the absence of characteristics" is explained from the perspective of the master. Because relying on the absence of characteristics, the wisdom of exertion arises, so the nature of the wisdom of exertion is the obstacle. Because this is the obstacle of the wisdom of exertion, it is an explanation from the perspective of the master. In the same sūtra, the "obstacle of exertion in the absence of characteristics and not being able to be independent in the presence of characteristics" is also an explanation from the perspective of the master.
