and it is said that universal ignorance that tends towards Nirvana is its nature. Therefore, in the Treatise Establishing Consciousness-Only, the obscuration of the Nirvana of the inferior vehicle of the fifth ground is as follows: Born together from the obscuration of the knowable, on the one hand, there is extreme weariness with samsara, and on the other hand, inclination towards Nirvana, similar to the lower two vehicles, weary of suffering and delighting in cessation, therefore, this is the obscuration on the path without distinction of the fifth ground. Furthermore, the explanation of the two kinds of universal ignorance is also as stated below in this very sutra: to keep in mind the very fact of not tending at all towards samsara, and to keep in mind the very fact of manifestly tending towards Nirvana, like that. In the commentary on the Noble Ten Grounds Sutra, it says that it is the obscuration of pride that thinks the body is completely pure. In the commentary on the Treatise Compendium of the Great Vehicle by Vasubandhu, translated by Laṅka, it is taught as the ignorance of the Nirvana of the inferior vehicle. In the commentary composed by the teacher Vasubandhu, it says that the obscuration of the Nirvana of the lower vehicle, although it is also a generalization of one universal ignorance, in reality it indicates both universal ignorances. In the Explanation of the Profound Meaning Sutra, it also elucidates in a way that its meaning is in accordance with this sutra. The so-called completely tending and manifestly tending towards samsara and Nirvana are the complete summary of the two universal ignorances, only the names are different. Regarding the explanation of its definitive words, it is also said in the Treatise Establishing Consciousness-Only: the obscuration of the Nirvana of the inferior vehicle that is taught is an explanation made from the aspect of the master, because it is the obscuration of the Nirvana of the inferior vehicle. What is said in this very sutra is an explanation made from the aspect of completely holding the activity, because complete weariness and turning away itself is the obscuration of the knowable. Therefore, the sixth ground is the antidote to the obscuration in which many signs universally arise, and this is the explanation of the obscuration of the sixth ground. The Treatise

It is established only in images, and from the obscurations of knowledge, one part that is co-emergent meditates on the four noble truths in the third ground, holding these four noble truths to be of the nature of defilement and purification. For example, suffering and origination are the source of samsara, which is the nature of the defiled aspect. Cessation and the path are what turn away from samsara, which is the nature of the purified aspect, so it is said that one thinks. Therefore, in that very treatise, it says that the sixth, the obscuration of the coarse marks that arise universally, is as follows: Because one aspect of the co-emergent obscuration of knowledge holds that the coarse marks of the defiled aspect that arise universally are truly existent, it obstructs the path of the sixth ground that is without defilement and purification. Therefore, when one enters the sixth ground, one completely abandons it. Therefore, the sixth ground abandons two kinds of universal ignorance and their faults. The first is the ignorance of the universal arising of individual discriminations of samsara, because here one holds that there are actions of entering into samsara in defilement, so it is included in the defiled aspect. The second is the ignorance of the universal arising of many signs, because here one holds that purification is truly existent, and because one takes the signs of purification, many signs arise universally, so one cannot abide in signless yoga for a long time. In the commentary on the Ten Bhumi Sutra, it is said that it is the obscuration of subtle habitual tendencies. In the commentary on the Abhidharmasamuccaya, translated in the time of Lang, it says that it is the ignorance of the subtle marks that arise universally. In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it says that the coarse marks of mere consciousness that arise universally are the forms of signs. Although the establishment of names and the statement of essence are generally said to be a summary of two kinds of ignorance, in reality there is no contradiction. The Samdhinirmocana Sutra says that all signs arise universally, and this sutra
