From. If one remembers the characteristics of the objects of inner samadhi, it is called distraction of characteristics, which is the fourth teaching on distraction of characteristics. These distractions are also explained differently. As it says in the Compendium of Abhidharma: "Thus, first making others believe, showing the cause to engage in virtue." The commentary on this says: "In order to make others believe that oneself possesses qualities, one shows its characteristics, and one should know that the cause and condition gradually diminish the engagement in virtue." As it says in the Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes: "Showing the characteristics by cause, for the sake of entering samadhi." Its explanation says: "The mind of the lower ground is still not certain and not yet pacified, therefore it is called distraction of characteristics." Although one who has attained samadhi has attained samadhi, the mind of the beginner is still not certain and not yet pacified, therefore the cause shows that characteristic. As it says in the Explanation: "The distraction of the mind of characteristics is like this: relying on external characteristics, one remembers the characteristics of the inner object." As it says in the Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning: "If a Bodhisattva relies on external characteristics and remembers the characteristics of the objects of inner samadhi within the inner body, it is called distraction of characteristics." As explained in the Explanation and the Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning, the meaning is the same as what is said in this sutra itself. Among them, the characteristics of the objects of inner samadhi are like this: when abiding correctly in inner samadhi, one obtains various non-manifest characteristics that cannot be expressed by manifest characteristics. This is to say that before attaining samadhi, relying on external objects, one thinks that one has obtained the characteristics of the objects of inner samadhi. This is to say that the inner characteristics are shown to be the same as the external characteristics. Other categories of explanation

Even if one has not truly attained the self-characteristic of Samadhi, the clinging to a slightly manifested characteristic, thinking that one has truly attained the self-characteristic of one's own Samadhi, is called distraction. If the feeling arising from internal attention causes the afflicted body to generate the conceit of 'I,' then it should be understood as the distraction of affliction, which is the fifth explanation of the distraction of affliction. Clinging to the bliss of Samadhi as 'mine' and generating pride in the afflicted body as 'I,' is called the distraction of affliction. Alternatively, if the feeling of pleasure, etc., arising from internal attention becomes the object of focus, and the seed of affliction acts as the cause and condition to generate the view of self and the conceit of 'I,' then the distraction itself, which is associated with view and conceit, is called affliction. Therefore, in the Compendium of Abhidharma Samuccaya, it says: The distraction of affliction is clinging to 'I,' clinging to 'mine,' and relying on the power of affliction in the aspect of 'I am.' When meditating on virtuous Dharma, one clings to the feelings that arise as 'I' or 'mine,' or 'I am,' and mixes with and clings to the characteristics. The commentary on this itself says: For example, due to the power of afflictions such as clinging to self, one clings to the feelings of pleasure, etc., that arise as 'I,' or 'mine,' or 'I am,' thereby making the virtuous aspect completely impure.

As it says in the sutra, it is the antidote to the obscurations of the five pervasive afflictions that give rise to grounds and evil deeds, and so on. The second (ground) is where the Tathagata truly explains the antidote. Moreover, it is divided into eleven types because it is the antidote to the eleven types of obscurations. This refers to the obscurations of the first ground. In the commentary on the "Holy Ten Grounds Sutra," it says, "It is the obscuration of the characteristic of the nature of ordinary beings." In the commentary written by Master Vasubandhu, it says, "It is the obscuration of ordinary beings." In the "Sandhinirmocana Sutra" and this sutra, only the names are listed, and there is no detailed explanation. In the commentary on the "Mahāyānasaṃgraha," translated by Xuanzang, it says, "It is the ignorance of ordinary beings." It only briefly explains the characteristic of the nature. In the "Vijñāptimātratāsiddhi," it says, "It is the obscuration of ordinary beings." It explains the characteristics in detail, therefore, here, we will temporarily combine the "Vijñāptimātratāsiddhi" to explain the characteristics of these obscurations. Among them, explaining the nature of the obscurations also has two meanings. The first is to explain the nature following the name, which is the nature of the dualistic conceptualization. Therefore, the "Vijñāptimātratāsiddhi" says, "The obscuration of the nature of ordinary beings is like this, that is, the obscuration arising from dualistic conceptualization. Because it is established as the nature of ordinary beings based on its seed." Furthermore, the treatise also says, "Whatever is the pervasive delusion of clinging to self and phenomena is the nature of ordinary beings mentioned here." The second is to explain the nature starting from reality, which is the nature of the twenty-two pervasive delusions and their inferior states. Therefore, the "Vijñāptimātratāsiddhi" says, "When the path of seeing arises, although the deeds and results of the evil realms are abandoned, this is temporarily the root of the arising of afflictions.
