Thus, it will be shown that (these) are said to be the causes of laziness. If one is overcome by dullness and sleep, or is attached to the taste of samadhi, or is defiled by any of the near afflictions of samadhi, then one should know that their mind is distracted internally. This is the third, showing the internal distraction. These words of the sutra are also divided into two: explanation and conclusion. This distraction is also different because the various treatises say different things, so first show what comes from the various treatises, and then show the meaning of the sutra verses. In the treatise "Abhidharma-samuccaya" it says: "When entering into virtuous Dharma, one becomes immersed and attached to the taste." In the commentary on "Abhidharma-samuccaya," it says: "Because it gives rise to dullness, agitation, and attachment to taste, it can cause one to fall away from samadhi." In the treatise "Madhyāntavibhāga," it says: "Attachment to the taste of samadhi and agitation are internal distractions." In the commentary on the treatise "Mahāyānasaṃgraha," in the translation of the waves, it says: "Internal mental distraction is like this: a distracted mind turns high and low and is attached to taste." In the treatise "Vibhaṅga," it says: "Thus, one is inferior due to dullness and sleep, or is attached to the taste of various samadhis, or because of the various near afflictions of the samadhis, the mind is distracted." In the "Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra," it says: "If a Bodhisattva is oppressed by sleep, and the mind is attached to samadhi, and is defiled by other afflictions of samadhi and samapatti, that is called internal mental distraction." The treatise "Vibhaṅga" also has something that agrees with it, so this sutra verse should be explained based on the treatise "Vibhaṅga." Thus, there are five types of internal distraction: the first is dullness, the second is sleep, and the third is bondage. The treatise "Vibhaṅga" says it is an inferior mind.

That is, the nature of the mind is weak, and there is no mind to cultivate samadhi, so it is called a weak mind, which is the nature of laziness. The fourth is to taste the flavor of equanimity, which shows the desire of the desire realm. It is not as the Sarvastivadins say, because they are particularly attached to the samadhi of the upper realms, so they say that they taste the flavor of equanimity, and show it as the samadhi of tasting the desire of the upper realms, because in this way the afflictions of desire will not develop to the upper realms. The treatise "Differentiation" says that there are meditations that are supreme in pride, meditations that are supreme in the Mahayana, and meditations that are supreme in view. The fifth is to be defiled by any of the near afflictions of equanimity, that is, the near afflictions that can hinder the eight blue lotus places, the ten pervasive places, the four formless equanimities, etc., such as carelessness and laziness, etc. In this way, it is defiled by these five kinds of near afflictions. The so-called defilement means that because it can cause the loss of samadhi, it is called defilement. The "Abhidharma Samuccaya" says that sinking, agitation, and tasting flavors will cause the loss of samadhi. In addition, the "Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle and the Extremes" says that the scattering of nature and outwardness cannot make what has not been obtained obtained; the two of inner and appearance will make what has already been obtained lost; the scattering of evil destinies cannot make one obtain liberation; the sixth kind of attention scattering cannot make one obtain unsurpassed Bodhi, so dullness, etc. will make even what has already been obtained lost. Or, the "Commentary on Distinguishing the Middle and the Extremes" says that because each characteristic is separated separately, in the true sense, all dullness, etc. will make what has not been obtained lost, so it will obviously become an obstacle.
