It is called "attention." The Abhidharma-samuccaya states: "What is it that, having abandoned samadhi, engages in another vehicle and scatters in the manner of abiding?" The commentary on this states: "Entering samadhi from another samadhi, and relying on another vehicle, one should know that this is a scattering in relation to the former." This is explained in terms of the nature of the near afflictions scattering in appearance. In the Madhyānta-vibhāga and the Vyakhyā, it is called "attention." In the old translation of the Madhyānta-vibhāga, it is called "mind." Mind and memory are also synonyms for attention, because the translators had different ideas, so the naming became different. Chapter Forty-eight. If, with respect to the characteristics mixed with the five desirable qualities of external objects, there is a near affliction of conceptualization, and if the mind is allowed to scatter towards the external object of focus, then one should know that this is the mind scattering externally, which is the second teaching on the mind scattering externally. This sutra passage can also be divided into two: explanation and conclusion. The explanations of this scattering also differ in the teachings. The Abhidharma-samuccaya states: "When engaging in virtue, the mind scatters towards the five desirable qualities." In the commentary on this in the Abhidharma-samuccaya, it states: "Like this, when cultivating the application to virtue such as attainment, having abandoned the focus on it, one should know that the mind scatters towards the five desirable qualities of external objects." The Madhyānta-vibhāga states: "External objects." The new translation of the Madhyānta-vibhāga and the Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi state: "The mind scatters towards the object of focus." The Vyakhyā states: "If one focuses on two aspects, one will decline. For example, with respect to desirable qualities,

It is said that there are five desirable qualities and the characteristics of bustle. The Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning states that there are three kinds of degeneration, namely, being attached to the five desirable qualities, places of bustle, and characteristics. In this very sutra, it teaches external distraction based on three kinds of objects. Among them, the so-called "if the mind is let loose" truly shows the nature of the three kinds of distraction, namely, the mind is let loose on the five desirable qualities, let loose on the mixed characteristics, and the mind is let loose on the objects of focus other than the first two objects. Among them, the so-called "if the five desirable qualities of the external objects" refers to the first object mentioned, the five objects that are in accordance with the mind are called the five desirable qualities. The so-called "mixed characteristics" are the nature of bustle, which is the second object mentioned. Therefore, the treatise explains the five desirable qualities and the characteristics of bustle. The so-called "the afflictions close to the existing conceptualization" generally shows conceptualization from as many afflictions close to the first two objects as there are, because everything has the ability to let go to the object of focus. The so-called "external object of focus" refers to the third object mentioned, the aspects of the senses and so on that are different from the first two objects are called external objects. Here, too, it should be said "to the afflictions close to the existing conceptualization," because the previous text has already included it, so it is said briefly. Therefore, in the Sutra Unraveling the Profound Meaning, after teaching the three kinds of objects, it then speaks of the afflictions close to it. The so-called "to" is the meaning of distinction shown in the treatise showing the door of reasoning. That is to say, from the afflictions close to the conceptualization that exist in these three kinds of objects, it distinguishes other afflictions close to anger and so on, and only the affliction close to the mind being let loose is the external distraction.
