This is in accordance with what is said in the (sutra). In the treatise translated at the time of Lanka (Lankavatara), the commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, five kinds (of distraction) are also mentioned, which do not agree with what is said in this sutra. Therefore, in order to eliminate the distractions therein, it is called 'Reproach,' which shows the perfection of meditation. In the commentary on this (treatise), it is said that there are five kinds of distraction: distraction by nature, such as the five aggregates of consciousness; outward distraction, such as the consciousness flowing to external objects; inward distraction, such as the mind becoming high and low and experiencing tastes, etc.; distraction of bad habits, such as attachment to self and what belongs to self, etc.; and distraction of attention, such as having inferior thoughts, abandoning the Great Vehicle and attending to the Small Vehicle. This is because the distraction of characteristics is removed from the five kinds of distraction, and the distraction of nature is added. In the commentaries written by Master Vasubandhu and Asanga, there is no distinction. In the treatises Compendium of Abhidharma and Miscellaneous Compendium of Abhidharma, it is also said that there are six kinds of distraction, which is in accordance with what is said in the treatise Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. Therefore, in Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, it is said that there are six kinds of distraction: distraction by nature, outward distraction, inward distraction, distraction of characteristics, distraction of bad habits, and distraction of attention. The details are as described therein. In the treatise Explanation, it is also said that there are six kinds (of distraction), in accordance with what is said in Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes. The difference is that attention is shown first, while nature appears sixth. If the sutra says that there are five kinds (of distraction), then why do the treatises add the word 'nature' and summarize it into six kinds?

Then, it is said that the treatises also rely on the sutras, and apart from the reason for explaining "five kinds of distraction," the situation of explaining separately is that, except for the state of Buddhahood, in other states, the five aggregates of consciousness are all distracted, because they are not in equanimity, therefore, it is explained separately as self-nature distraction. The reason why the sutra does not say self-nature distraction is that it becomes a long time to obstruct samadhi, and it is not the most supreme obstacle, so it is not said in brief. In the commentary on the treatise "Compendium of the Great Vehicle," translated in the time of Lang, it is said that there are five kinds of distraction, which also has two faults: it does not agree with the sutras, and there is no such explanation in the commentaries made by Master Vasubandhu and No-Self-Nature, so it cannot be taken as प्रमाण. The meaning of the words other than that will be explained when the words of the sutra appear directly, so it is not explained here. Attention distraction, outward mind distraction, inward mind distraction, sign distraction, and evil destination distraction, this is called the second kind of arranging names according to number. Son of the family, if the Bodhisattvas abandon the attention with the Great Vehicle and fall into the attention with the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, then know that it is attention distraction, etc., this is the third kind of explaining separately in order. If those distractions are abbreviated, they can be divided into two categories, and after that, I want to explain the meaning of the sutra. Like this: explaining the meaning of words and explaining self-nature. Among them, the first kind of explaining the meaning of words is also explained through general and specific, among which the general is explaining five kinds of distraction. Among them, five, is saying the number. Attention, etc., because they make the mind distracted, they are called distractions, among the six kinds of separate explanations, it is the separate explanation with number. Among them, the specific

The names of distraction are also fivefold: attention and the mind of external objects, the mind of internal objects and signs, and the state of misery. Among these, attention refers to what is said in the sutra: abandoning attention that possesses the Great Vehicle, and falling into attention that possesses the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, that is the distraction of attention. There are two explanations for this sutra's words. Some say that attention itself is the nature of distraction. If combined with this explanation, there are six kinds of explanations, this is the explanation of completely grasping the activity, because in this way, what is called attention is itself distraction. Some say that in this sutra, distraction is drawn out by two kinds of attention, therefore it is called the distraction of attention, but the true meaning is that distraction itself is the nature. If combined with this explanation, this is the explanation in terms of the master. There are two meanings to this. In the Sutra Unraveling of Intent, it is said to be the distraction of attention of Bodhisattvas. Therefore, in the Sutra Unraveling of Intent, it is said to be the distraction of proper attention. Some say that because it is the distraction of attention of the Hearers, therefore the Treatise Distinguishing the Middle and the Extremes says that attention is made with an inferior mind. Although there are two explanations like this, the latter explanation is correct. Therefore, in the Compendium of Abhidharma, it is said that there are also six kinds of the dharma of distraction. Among these, the distraction of the mind to external objects refers to what is said in the sutra: If one generates the near afflictions of conceptualization that exist in the signs associated with the five desirable qualities of external objects, and lets the mind scatter to the objects of external objects, that is what is said in the sutra. The words of this sutra actually show that there are three kinds of external objects, the first is the five desirable qualities of external objects.
