It has been explained. It is because it is in accordance with the nature of sinking and also scattering and sharpness. The second is that since it is an obstacle that hinders the harmonization of self-nature, characteristics, and mutual opposition, dullness hinders insight, and agitation hinders calm abiding. As stated in the scriptures such as the Compendium of Abhidharma Samuccaya, the Explanation, and the Establishment of Consciousness Only, it is said that dullness is the state of insight and agitation is the state of calm abiding, which are mutually incompatible. Therefore, in the case of obstacles, it refers to mutually incompatible obstacles, but here in the state of completeness, if each simultaneously follows and eliminates the two mutually incompatible obstacles, completeness can be attained. O Blessed One, if Bodhisattvas have manifest calm abiding and insight, what Dharma should they understand that will cause the mind to be distracted? From this point onwards is the third, which shows the door of detailed differentiation of the five types of distraction. This also has two aspects: the request and the answer. This is the first, asking what Dharma should be known that will become the cause of mental distraction when calm abiding and insight arise. Son of good family, it is necessary to know the five types, etc., which shows the second, the correct answer. This is also shown in three ways: by stating the number and briefly answering, by listing the names according to the number, and by explaining them separately in order. This is the first, that is, distraction, in short, it should be known that there are five types, this is the conclusion. Those distractions are explained differently in each teaching, but in this sutra, five types are mentioned, and it should be understood as stated in the sutra. In the Sandhinirmocana Sutra, five types are also mentioned, although the names are different, the meanings are the same. Therefore, in the Sandhinirmocana Sutra, it is said that there are mental distractions and afflictive distractions, the other three are the sutra.
