The meaning of cutting off is as follows: Because it obstructs the noble path and obstructs the root of virtue of the practice of the noble path, it is called an obscuration. As explained extensively in that very text. In the treatise *Abhidharma-samuccaya*, it is said that whatever does not clearly manifest the side of virtue is the meaning of obscuration. As stated in the aforementioned treatises, it is because it obscures the mind and does not allow entry into the aspects of virtue. In the treatise *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, afflictions are generally referred to as obscurations. Therefore, it is stated in that very text that because they obscure and cover the meaning of that very thing, they are obscurations. Furthermore, it is stated in that very text that because they become an obscuration of knowledge for objects of knowledge, they are obscurations. Furthermore, it is stated in that very text that the five obscurations are to be understood as being established from the perspective of being incompatible with the five states. Because one is robbed by the objects of the householder's life, the desire for sensual pleasures is established as an obscuration from the perspective of being incompatible with the teachings of the noble ones. Because one is difficult to tame with the discussions, reproaches, and subsequent teachings of those who are in accordance with the Dharma, the obscuration of malice is established from the perspective of being incompatible with the Dharma that is to be rejoiced in with correctness. The obscuration of drowsiness and sleep is established from the perspective of being incompatible with calm abiding. The obscuration of agitation and regret is established from the perspective of being incompatible with insight. The obscuration of doubt is established from the perspective of being incompatible with the non-perverted distinction of the excellent speech of the Dharma, as well as the practice of the Dharma, the teachings of the teacher, and the devotion to Nirvana. The extensive explanation of the five obscurations should be understood as it appears in the treatises *Mahāvibhāṣā*, *Tathatā-samgraha*, *Abhidharma-samuccaya*, *Yogācārabhūmi*, and *Asaṅga's Compendium of Determinations*. "Lord, how long will it take to attain the path of calm abiding completely perfected and purified?" From this point onwards, it is the complete

It shows the completion. This also has two aspects: showing the path of tranquility (śamatha) and showing the path of insight (vipaśyanā). Each is shown through asking and answering. This is entering the path from the very beginning. Noble son, to the extent that dullness and sleep are present, if they are truly and completely eliminated, then the path of tranquility is completed, and obtaining complete purity is called the second Tathāgata's correct answer. For example, noble son, this is not like the initial attainment, but if agitation and regret are completely eliminated and become completely perfect, then by completely eliminating dullness and sleep, it is initially called complete attainment. Blessed One, how can we say that the path of insight is complete and that complete purity is obtained? This is asking about the completion of the path of insight. Noble son, to the extent that agitation and regret are present, if they are truly and completely eliminated, then the path of insight is completed, and obtaining complete purity is called the second Tathāgata's correct answer. For example, noble son, this is not like the initial attainment, but if dullness is eliminated up to regret, then it is initially called complete attainment. Why are the five obscurations shown as obscurations to tranquility and insight? Agitation and regret are obscurations to tranquility, but not to insight; dullness and sleep are obscurations to insight, but not to the completion of tranquility. If so, it would contradict what was shown earlier, wouldn't it? It is said: Tranquility and insight each have two obscurations. The first is the obscuration of self-nature, characteristics, and mutual conformity, so dullness is an obscuration to tranquility, and agitation is an obscuration to insight. Therefore, in the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice, it says: Dullness is an obscuration to tranquility, and agitation is an obscuration to insight.
