Moreover, it obscures vipaśyanā. Attachment to dwelling in tranquility and contentment with just a little should be understood as obstacles to both. Because of the former, one does not meditate. Because of the latter, the practice does not become ultimate. This is the teaching of the obstacles to both. Thus, the obstacles to both are of two kinds: due to attachment to dwelling in tranquility, one does not meditate on śamatha and vipaśyanā; due to the power of being content with just a little, the meditation on śamatha and vipaśyanā does not become ultimate. Bhagavan, among these five obscurations, which are the obscurations of śamatha? Which are the obscurations of vipaśyanā? Which are the obscurations of both? From here onwards is the second, showing the five obscurations as the door to showing the obscurations of śamatha and vipaśyanā. This is also of two kinds: showing the five obscurations as obscuring śamatha and vipaśyanā, and from "Bhagavan" onwards, showing that the two paths of śamatha and vipaśyanā become completely perfect. The first is also shown by asking and answering. This is the first question itself. Son of good family, agitation and regret are the obscurations of śamatha. Torpor and sleep and doubt are the obscurations of vipaśyanā. Desire for sensual pleasures and malice should be understood as the obscurations of both. This is the second, the Tathāgata's correct answer. Thus, among the five obscurations, agitation and regret are the obscurations of śamatha, because they cause distraction. Torpor and sleep and doubt are the obscurations of vipaśyanā, because they are unclear and uncertain. Desire for sensual pleasures and malice are the obscurations of both, because they are root afflictions, so the power of obscuration is supreme. The nature, characteristics, and definitions of these five obscurations should be understood as taught in the treatise *Mahāvibhāṣā*. Therefore, in this very text, there are five obscurations, namely, the obscuration of desire for sensual pleasures and malice.

The obscuration of earth, and the obscuration of dullness and sleep, and the obscuration of excitement and regret, and the obscuration of doubt. What is the nature of these five obscurations? It is said: It is the nature of the thirty things of the desire realm. For example, desire and malice, the ten things that are combined with the five aggregates of the desire realm respectively, and dullness and excitement, the five aggregates of the three realms, and when combined separately, they belong to the unwholesome and the indeterminate, among which only the unwholesome are regarded as the ten things that are obscurations, and sleep is combined with the five aggregates of the desire realm, and belongs to the wholesome, unwholesome, and indeterminate, Among which only the unwholesome are regarded as the five things that are obscurations, and regret is only abandoned by meditation in the desire realm, and also belongs to the wholesome and unwholesome, among which only the unwholesome are regarded as the one thing that is an obscuration, and doubt belongs to the four aggregates of the three realms, and also belongs to the unwholesome and the indeterminate, among which only the unwholesome are regarded as the four things that are obscurations. Therefore, these five obscurations are the nature of the thirty things of the desire realm. What kind of characteristics do obscurations have? The venerable spiritual friend said this: Whatever is the nature, that is the characteristic, and whatever is the characteristic, that is the nature. Like this, the nature and characteristics of all dharmas are inseparable from each other. Furthermore, seeking and searching for desires, that is the characteristic of craving for desires. Having a mind of torment towards sentient beings, that is the characteristic of malice. The body and mind shrinking back, that is the characteristic of dullness. The body and mind fluttering and shaking, that is the characteristic of excitement. The mind being unclear and contracting, that is the characteristic of sleep. Regretting in the mind, that is the characteristic of regret. The mind and intention both hesitating, that is the characteristic of doubt, the nature and characteristics of obscurations have been explained. Here, the definitive word is to be explained: Why are there five obscurations? What is the meaning of the word "obscuration"? It is said: In the middle
