All natures that are imputed are not truly existent. The natures of other-powered are merely existent in names and conceptual distinctions, and can be expressed in terms. The natures of thoroughly established and selflessness are not truly existent, it is said. Furthermore, the teacher Asanga in the commentary on the Compendium on the Great Vehicle, and in the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom, citing the sutra of the Noble Perfection of Wisdom as a source, said: All dharmas that are accumulated, produced, obtained, and thought to be constant and unchanging through imputation, all of these are called non-existent. And those that are produced by causes and conditions are said to be existent. Furthermore, the Thus-Gone One said in various sutras that among these three natures, the nature of the imputed is emptiness. And the two natures of other-powered and thoroughly established are existent. Therefore, for the teachings that speak of emptiness, there is another intention, so one should not grasp them literally and then assert that all dharmas are non-existent. Whoever grasps the meaning literally is slandering the Great Vehicle, because it is not a misunderstanding of emptiness, but a manifestation of great wrong views, it is said. There are many other such reasons, but they will not be elaborated on here. If that is the case, then how should we interpret and explain those statements that previously cited sutras as a basis to completely negate the other-powered? As the teacher Dharmapala said, in the previous sutras it is said: No dharma is born even a little, no dharma ceases even a little. The intention of this statement is to show that the distinction of the self-nature of the imputed nature, the nature of the expresser and the expressed, is emptiness, unborn, and unceasing. In terms of views, if one examines the dharmas in detail, it will be said that they are neither existent nor non-existent, because the view that is free from imputation is completely pure, so for the worldly causes and conditions

If one can understand that phenomena arising from conditions are neither existent nor nonexistent, then one can also comprehend what is stated in the latter two sutras. Just like the latter two sutras also explain that phenomena arising from conditions are empty of their own nature, therefore there is no contradiction between them. Like this, there are two types of phenomena that arise from conditions: the completely imputed nature and the other-dependent nature. Here, it is actually explained that the self-nature of the completely imputed is not existent, but it does not refer to the other-dependent nature. The above explains the meaning of what Dharmapala and others have said, making them consistent with each other. The teacher Bhāviveka also relied on the sutras and said this: If the other-dependent nature exists, why does the sutra say that there is nothing among all the realities of phenomena that is not empty? Furthermore, why does the sutra say that the Blessed One told Subhuti: The self-nature of phenomena such as form does not exist at all. Furthermore, the Blessed One told Mahamati: The reality of all phenomena is unborn, because things that existed before or did not exist before cannot be produced. Thus, he raised a question. Dharmapala has a deep meaning in this, what kind of deep meaning is it? Just like those sutras are only spoken for the sake of refuting the completely imputed, not referring to everything being nonexistent. If one says that everything is nonexistent, then it will become a wrong view. How to know such a deep meaning? Because other scriptures have explained it in detail. Just like the Blessed One said before: I only meant the self-nature of similar continuity when I said that all phenomena are without self-nature. If some people cling to the literal meaning and say that the self-nature of defilements and pure phenomena does not exist either, then this misinterpretation of emptiness is called a wrong view. As explained in detail in the sutra itself. Therefore, Vasubandhu made...
