The eighteen emptinesses, the sixteen emptinesses, the fourteen emptinesses, and the two kinds of emptinesses, these should also be understood as they appear in the detailed definitions. After mentioning the explanations from those that are taught as annihilation, now the meaning of the words of the sutra will be explained. In this sutra, seventeen emptinesses are taught, from the twenty emptinesses, two are omitted, namely the emptiness of inherent nature. From the twenty, the emptiness of self-characteristic and the emptiness of general characteristic, these two are condensed into one emptiness of characteristic, therefore it becomes seventeen. From the eighteen emptinesses, the emptiness of inherent nature is missing. This is first of all that all phenomena are emptiness, as it says in the Arya Prajnaparamita Sutra: 'All phenomena are emptiness, like this, namely the five skandhas, the eighteen dhatus, the twelve ayatanas, including form, formless, visible, invisible, with obstruction, without obstruction, with defilements, without defilements, conditioned, unconditioned, whatever all phenomena are.' In the Arya Prajnaparamita Sutra Commentary, it says: 'So-called all phenomena are emptiness, all phenomena are the five skandhas, the twelve ayatanas, the eighteen dhatus, and so on.' The details are as explained in that very text. The treatises explain the eighteen emptinesses, and in the Madhyantavibhaga, 'all phenomena' refers to the ten powers of the Tathagata, the fearlessnesses, and so on, here 'all phenomena' refers to all the completely pure dharmas of the Buddha. In the sutra, in order to gather all the teachings that are to be expressed, therefore relying on words and letters, the emptiness of all phenomena is greatly taught. Why are the ten signs and the seventeen emptinesses taught in this sutra? It is said: As it says in the Arya Prajnaparamita Sutra Commentary: 'If it is too brief, it will not be fully expressed, if it is too elaborate, it will increase many unnecessary affairs, therefore only eighteen are taught.' Like this.

This is also similar to that. In order to individually and correctly know the meaning of the Suchness of abiding, what is called having the characteristic of following the continuum of arising, ceasing, abiding, and changing, is the showing of two characteristics. This is also shown by showing the characteristic and showing emptiness, and this is the showing of the first characteristic. What is said here as "Suchness of abiding" is the truth of suffering among the Four Noble Truths. Among the seven types of Suchness, it is called the Suchness of abiding that was previously shown. It is because of the differentiation made by actions and afflictions, etc. Also, among the individual abidings of the four truths, the truth of suffering is the first, so it obtains the name of abiding, because it protects its own nature and does not allow it to change, it is called Suchness. Therefore, the truth of suffering has the characteristic of following the continuum of arising, etc., so it is called Suchness. Also, this has two types of characteristics, the first is the four characteristics of arising, etc. The second is the characteristic of following the continuum of the three times, therefore, the two types of emptiness individually eliminate each characteristic. That is, it is truly eliminated by the emptiness of self-nature and the emptiness of beginninglessness and endlessness, so-called this is the showing of the second antidote emptiness. This also has two types, namely the emptiness of self-nature and the emptiness of beginninglessness and endlessness. In the Sutra of the Noble Perfection of Wisdom, this emptiness of self-nature is divided into two types of emptiness and shown, namely the emptiness of one's own self-nature and the emptiness of the general self-nature. Therefore, in that very Sutra, the emptiness of one's own self-nature is as follows: The self-nature of all phenomena, how it changes and has obstacles, is the self-nature of form. Feeling is the self-nature of sensation, etc. The general self-nature of that is as follows: the general self-nature of all phenomena, how it is suffering, is the general self-nature of contaminated phenomena, etc., it is said.
