are the explanations. The terms "words and letters" generally refer to the collection of names and letters, therefore, in the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice, the essence of the Sutra section is summarized into two aspects: words and meanings. Among them, words are the place, and meanings are to be understood as residing within them. So, what are words? For example, it is stated: 'The collection of names, the collection of sentences, and the collection of letters,' therefore, words are clearly referred to as names, sentences, and letters. That is to say, for example, when Bodhisattvas initially practice yoga, in order to correctly understand the meaning of the twelve divisions of scripture separately, various characteristics of words and letters will appear.' This will become a teaching. The statement 'to truly eliminate all phenomena with emptiness' refers to the teaching of the second kind of emptiness that completely eliminates. The explanations of these emptinesses differ from each other. In the first section of the Holy Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, the meaning of twenty kinds of emptiness is explained. Therefore, in the same Sutra, it is also said: 'Furthermore, Subhuti, the characteristics of the Mahayana of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas are as follows: inner emptiness, outer emptiness, inner-outer emptiness, emptiness of emptiness, great emptiness, ultimate emptiness, conditioned emptiness, unconditioned emptiness, emptiness beyond extremes, emptiness without beginning or end, emptiness without abandonment, emptiness without alteration, emptiness of self-nature, emptiness of self-characteristic and general characteristic, emptiness of all dharmas, emptiness of non-apprehension, emptiness of non-entity, emptiness of essence, emptiness of non-entity essence, these are the characteristics of the Mahayana of Bodhisattva Mahasattvas.' Subhuti asked the Bhagavan: 'Bhagavan, what is inner emptiness?' The Bhagavan

The departed one (Buddha) said: Subhuti, the inner is the inner dharma, the six inner sense bases, which are those themselves, in that, the eye is empty of the eye. What is the reason for that? Because it is neither permanent nor perishable, its nature is such. The ear and so on are also the same. The outer is the outer dharma, the six outer sense bases, understand as before. What is called inner and outer are the inner and outer dharmas, the twelve sense bases, in that, the six inner sense bases are empty of the six outer sense bases. What is the reason for that? Because it is neither permanent nor perishable, its nature is such. What is emptiness, emptiness? For example, whatever is the emptiness of all dharmas, this emptiness is empty of emptiness. What is the reason for that? Because it is neither permanent nor perishable, its nature is such. The Blessed One said: Great emptiness is like this, whatever is the emptiness of the ten directions. The Blessed One said: Ultimate emptiness is like this, nirvana itself, this ultimate is empty of ultimate emptiness. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, conditioned emptiness is like this, whatever are the three realms. In that, the desire realm is empty of the desire realm, the form and formless realms are also the same. The Blessed One said: Unconditioned emptiness is like this, whatever is no birth, no abiding, no change, and no cessation. This unconditioned is empty of the unconditioned. Transcending the limits emptiness is like this, whatever is the absence of an object of focus at the limit of emptinesses. The Blessed One said: Beginningless and endless emptiness is like this, whatever is not focusing on beginning and end, and not focusing on the limit of going and coming. The Blessed One said: Non-abandoning emptiness is like this, whatever is the object of focus of abandoning and removing etc. The Blessed One said: Non-transforming emptiness is like this, abandoning and

What is the object that does not need to be completely abandoned because there is no obscuration? The Blessed One said: Emptiness of self-nature is like this: all dharmas, in terms of their self-nature, whether it is the self-nature of conditioned dharmas or the self-nature of unconditioned dharmas, whatever is not created by these three vehicles, nor created by others, that is it. The Blessed One said: Own-characteristic is like this: the own-characteristic of all dharmas, changing and with obstruction, is the own-characteristic of form. Feeling is the own-characteristic of sensation. Grasping at signs is the own-characteristic of perception. Activation is the own-characteristic of formation. Discrimination is the own-characteristic of consciousness, and so on, like the own-characteristic of conditioned things, or what is the own-characteristic of unconditioned things. The Blessed One said: General characteristic is like this: the general characteristic of all dharmas, for example, suffering is the general characteristic of dharmas with defilements. Impermanence is the general characteristic of dharmas with defilements. Selflessness is the general characteristic of all dharmas, and so on, like this, what are the countless general characteristics. The Blessed One said: All dharmas are like this: the five aggregates, the twelve sources, and the eighteen elements, that is, with form and without form, visible and invisible, with obstruction and without obstruction, with defilements and without defilements, conditioned and unconditioned, whatever it is. The Blessed One said: Unattainability is like this, all dharmas are unattainable, for example, because the three times are unattainable, the past does not have two times, so it is unattainable; the future does not have two times, so it is unattainable; the present does not have two times, so it is unattainable. The Blessed One said: Emptiness of no entity is that in which not even a little entity is attainable. The Blessed One said: Essence emptiness is like this: dharma.
