That is because the nature of those gatherings is not observable. The Blessed One declared: "The nature of non-things is like this: for all phenomena, the nature that gathers and the nature that is gathered are both non-existent." The term "non-things" refers to the absence of self-nature in all phenomena. The term "nature" refers to the combination of both, which is shown. Furthermore, emptiness has four aspects: things that exist, things that do not exist, self-nature, and other-nature. That which exists refers to the unconditioned. Self-nature refers to the emptiness of all phenomena by their own self-nature. This emptiness is not made by consciousness, not made by sight, nor made by another. The term "other" refers to whether the Tathagata appears in the world or not, all phenomena are the nature of abiding by the Dharma, up to the limit of reality, all are empty because of other-nature. Furthermore, in the second chapter of the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom of the Noble One, eighteen emptinesses are taught. Although there are differences in elaboration and condensation compared to the twenty emptinesses previously taught, there is no difference in meaning. Among the twenty emptinesses, abandoning and not abandoning, and non-transformation are combined into one, called the emptiness of abandoning and not abandoning; the emptiness of self-nature is combined into self-nature and common nature, called one category. In the third chapter of the Sutra of the Perfection of Wisdom of the Noble One, the names of nineteen emptinesses are listed, but there is no detailed explanation. Among them, the first sixteen emptinesses are the same as those previously taught. The latter three emptinesses are different, namely, the emptiness of object, the emptiness of possessor, and the emptiness of one lacking the other.

The term "nature" is a collective term for "essence," and it possesses the qualities of non-abandonment emptiness, non-object emptiness, and self-nature emptiness. Therefore, although there are differences in names, the emptiness that does not change, which is the emptiness of non-abandonment. The detailed explanation of the essence is the same as the explanation when explaining the twenty emptinesses. In the second chapter of the Holy Perfection of Wisdom, in the four hundred fascicles, it is said that there are seven types of emptiness, namely the five aggregates, the twelve sense bases, the eighteen realms, the four truths, the twelve links of dependent origination, conditioned and unconditioned phenomena, and all other phenomena, which are merely the establishment of names, without any detailed explanation. In the Great Chapter Sutra, eighteen emptinesses and four emptinesses are taught. In the commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom, eighteen emptinesses and four emptinesses are also taught. Furthermore, in the Suchness, the eighteen emptinesses, such as inner emptiness, etc., all say at the end that because all phenomena are neither permanent nor annihilated. What does this mean? It is said that if someone does not cultivate this emptiness, they will inevitably fall into the two extremes of permanence or annihilation. Why is that? If phenomena truly exist, then there is no meaning of cessation, and they will fall into permanence. For example, someone comes out of one room and enters another room, and it cannot be said that the eyes do not see it. Phenomena are also the same, entering from the future into the present, and entering from the present into the past. If they do not cease in the present, then yogis will see existence as a fault, and thus cling to existence through emptiness. If the mind sees emptiness as supreme and becomes attached to emptiness, then it will fall into annihilation. Therefore, although yogis destroy existence through emptiness, emptiness

Since you do not cling to appearances, you abandon the two extremes and enter the Middle Way. The eighteen emptinesses were also spoken out of great compassion to subdue sentient beings. Therefore, at the end of the eighteen emptinesses, it is said, "It is not permanent, it is not annihilation," and this is called the Great Vehicle. Whatever is contrary to this is called a madman who delights in elaboration, and he gains nothing from the Buddha's teachings. It is like some people who see jewels in a pile of precious stones with greedy eyes, but gain nothing. If the eighteen emptinesses have already encompassed all emptinesses, why are the four emptinesses spoken of? It is said: Although the eighteen emptinesses have encompassed all emptinesses, there are two ways in which the Buddhas teach: sometimes they first summarize and then explain extensively, and sometimes they first explain extensively and then summarize. In order to explain the meaning in detail, they first explain extensively and then summarize. In order to be easily understood, and in order to gather retinues, for the sake of sentient beings who come later, they briefly state the important meaning, or express it in verses. Therefore, here the Blessed One first extensively taught the eighteen emptinesses, and later summarized them into four emptinesses, as it is said in the extensive scriptures. In the Sutra of the Great Nirvana, it says that there are eleven emptinesses. In the Sutra of the Great Collection, it teaches eighteen emptinesses. In the Great Chapter Sutra, it teaches eighteen emptinesses and four emptinesses. In the Commentary and the Distinguishing the Middle from the Extremes, it teaches sixteen emptinesses. In the Holy Lankavatara Sutra and the Holy Prajnaparamita Commentary, it is said that there are six kinds of emptiness. In the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice, it says that there are four emptinesses, emptiness in the sutras and treatises.
