What is the difference? It is said: Initially, merely knowing that it will perish is called knowing. Temporarily entering into the state is called seeing. Initially, individually distinguishing is called knowing. Understanding and comprehending is called seeing. This shows up to the point where there is a difference between profound and not profound. As explained in the extensive explanation itself. Here, in conjunction with the teachings of the Great Vehicle, and because the individual explanations differ, the teacher Vasubandhu, in writing the commentary on the Vajracchedika Prajnaparamita Sutra, said: Regarding knowing and seeing being considered as one, there are two viewpoints: one is to differentiate through inferential knowledge; the other is to differentiate through the flesh eye and the divine eye. Therefore, in that commentary, it is said: Is the term "knowing" used to indicate superiority? If not, why did the Tathagata say "seeing"? If "seeing" was not said, some would think that the Tathagata knows through the wisdom of the noble ones. If that were the case, saying "seeing" would be sufficient, but why did the Tathagata say "knowing"? If "knowing" was not said, some would think that the Tathagata sees through the flesh eye and so on. In the commentary by the teacher Gunaprabha, the meaning is also explained to be mostly in accordance with this. In the commentary on the Arya Prajnaparamita Sutra, it is said: For example, learning to read, recite, and discriminate and contemplate from others is called knowing. Like obtaining something manifested by one's own body, that is called seeing. For example, hearing things with the ear, still with doubt, is called knowing. Like seeing clearly with one's own eyes, without doubt, that is called seeing. Furthermore, in that same sutra, it is said: What is known initially is called knowing, and what is deeply entered into later is called seeing. Knowing is not fully accomplished.

It is the earth. Seeing is called ultimate. There are also four possibilities for knowledge and seeing. The first is that it is knowledge but not seeing, such as all that is known, the many views of the world, and any other wisdom dharma other than the five views, which is called knowledge. The second is that it is not seeing but is knowledge, such as the five views and the correct view of the world, and the eight patiences. Other than that, any undefiled wisdom is also called knowledge and also called seeing. Any other dharma other than seeing and knowledge is neither seeing nor knowledge. Furthermore, it is said in the same text, how does one attain knowledge and seeing by meditating on samadhi? The answer is that even without eyes, one can see objects of form, and any discrimination is called seeing. The names of the gods are like this, and the lineages and appearances are like this, and any knowledge is called knowledge. Furthermore, in the treatise "The Land of Yoga Practice," what is the difference between knowledge and seeing? The answer is that any wisdom that has past and future hidden objects as its object is called knowledge. Any wisdom that has present objects as its object is called seeing. Furthermore, any wisdom that is aimed at by the grasped is called knowledge. Any wisdom that is aimed at by the grasper is called seeing. Furthermore, any wisdom that arises from hearing and thinking is called knowledge. Any wisdom that arises from meditation is called seeing. Furthermore, any wisdom that abandons afflictions is called knowledge. Any wisdom that, having abandoned afflictions, directly realizes liberation is called seeing. Furthermore, any wisdom that is aimed at the object of its own characteristic is called knowledge. Any wisdom that is aimed at the object of the general characteristic is called seeing. Furthermore, relying on imputation, internal and external actions, such as being called self, etc.

Gods and nagas, as well as yakshas and asuras, garudas and mahoragas, or armies and forests, as well as houses and mountains, etc., like these, in the manner of various forms of signs, the wisdom that focuses on these objects is called knowing. The wisdom that acts on its own characteristics and general characteristics is called seeing. Furthermore, the wisdom that seeks all phenomena completely is called knowing. The wisdom that individually distinguishes what is completely removed is called seeing. Furthermore, the wisdom that focuses on the non-discriminating image as an object is called knowing. The wisdom that focuses on the discriminating image as an object is called seeing. Furthermore, the wisdom that focuses on the image of knowable form is called seeing. The wisdom that focuses on the image of knowable formlessness is called knowing. Thus it is said. Bodhisattva Maitreya again asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, how do bodhisattvas who cultivate shamatha and vipashyana eliminate which signs with what attention? From here onwards is the second, which explains the complete elimination of signs. This can also be divided into three types: distinguishing the complete elimination of signs through questions and answers, and from "Blessed One, Blessed One said as follows" onwards, distinguishing the ability and inability to individually examine through questions and answers, and from "Blessed One" onwards, distinguishing the signs that are difficult to eliminate through questions and answers. Among them, the first complete elimination of signs can also be divided into four types, namely questioning, answering, and explanation. This is the initial questioning. Among them, there are also three intentions in the questioning. First, "with what attention" refers to the attention of asking for elimination, that is, asking with what attention among the attentions. "Which" refers to completely
