It is for the purpose of distinguishing. That which arises from thinking is the wisdom that knows the Dharma, and the nature of the mind and mental factors that possess wisdom corresponding to wisdom. Cultivation is to become completely familiar, because it is through the excellence of Samadhi that wisdom arises, and thus one cultivates the antidote. That which arises from cultivation is the wisdom that knows the meaning and things, and the nature of the mind and mental factors that possess wisdom corresponding to wisdom, so it is said. In the commentary on the treatise "Yogacarabhumi-sastra," it is said that the wisdom of hearing is knowing the words and meaning. The wisdom of thinking is knowing the characteristics of the Dharma. The wisdom of cultivation is knowing the meaning and things. Why does the "Yogacarabhumi-sastra" say that the wisdom of hearing is focused on the Dharma, and the two wisdoms of thinking and cultivation are focused on the meaning? Furthermore, the "Yogacarabhumi-sastra" says that the noble truths can be fully grasped in three ways. What are the three? The wisdom of hearing fully grasps the words, the wisdom of thinking fully grasps the characteristics, and the wisdom of cultivation fully grasps the realization, as detailed therein. Why is there such inconsistency? How should it be reconciled? It is said that if it is combined with the teachings of the Mahayana scriptures, then in the true sense, all three wisdoms of hearing, etc., know the meaning and words. And the "Yogacarabhumi-sastra" says that the wisdom of hearing is focused on the Dharma, the wisdom of thinking fully grasps the meaning, etc., which is explained in detail from the perspective of characteristics. Regarding the difference between realms and grounds, the Sarvastivada school believes that in the desire realm there are only the two wisdoms of hearing and thinking, in the form realm there are only the two wisdoms of hearing and cultivation, and in the formless realm there is only the wisdom of cultivation, as stated in treatises such as the "Mahavibhasa-sastra." The Sautrantika school believes

And it is said that in the realm of form there is only meditation. Therefore, in that very established treatise, from the chapter on explaining the three wisdoms, it says, "Of these three wisdoms, which are of the desire realm? Which are of the form and formless realms?" It is said: "The desire and form realms are all. The formless realm is only the wisdom of meditation." This is what appears. The details are as explained in that very treatise. Here, if combined with the teachings of the Mahayana, it is mostly in accordance with the teachings of the Sarvastivadins. In the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra, it is said that even in the desire realm there is samadhi. Some say that in the teachings of the Mahayana, the three wisdoms belong to all three realms. This needs to be examined. The extensive differentiation should be understood as it appears from the teachings on characteristics. "Son of good family, this is called the distinction of the three kinds of individual perfect knowledge." This is to be understood as the second general conclusion. Bodhisattva Maitreya also requested the Bhagavan thus: "Bhagavan, what is the knowledge of individual perfect knowledge and what is seeing, in comparison to the Dharma of individual perfect knowledge of Bodhisattvas who meditate on shamatha and vipashyana?" From here onwards is the second explanation of the difference between knowledge and seeing. This also has two aspects: asking and answering. This is the asking. The Bhagavan said to Bodhisattva Maitreya: "Son of good family, I have explained the difference between knowledge and seeing in many ways, but here I will explain its characteristics to you briefly." This and so on is the second showing of the Tathagata's true answer. This also has two aspects: granting permission to explain and truly explaining. This is the first. "Whatever special wisdom that meditates on shamatha and vipashyana, focusing on mixed dharmas, that is called knowledge." This and so on is the second showing of the Tathagata's true explanation. This also has two aspects: the showing of knowledge.
