Thus, the distinctions of similarity and dissimilarity are shown through the three wisdoms of the six kinds of meaning. In the treatise "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra," similarity and dissimilarity are shown through five causes. Therefore, in that very treatise, there are also five other causes, namely: "I shall listen to what has not been heard"; "I shall purify what has been heard"; "I shall abandon doubt"; "I shall turn my back on various views"; and "I shall understand all profound meanings and words through wisdom." The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, have fully shown the means of purifying the three wisdoms arising from listening, thinking, and meditating through those five causes, namely: the first two show the wisdom arising from listening; the middle two show the wisdom arising from thinking; and the last one shows the wisdom arising from meditating. The treatise "Vibhajyavāda" also explains the same thing. These three wisdoms are explained differently in various teachings. The Sarvāstivāda school believes that the wisdom of listening focuses on names; the wisdom of thinking focuses on names and meanings; and the wisdom of meditating focuses on meanings. Therefore, in the verses of the "Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya," it says: "Arising from listening, thinking, and meditating, the objects are names, both, and meaning." The commentary on this says, "If asked, what is the difference in the nature of these three wisdoms?" The Vibhajyavādins say, "The nature of these three wisdoms also has the distinction of focusing on names, both, and meaning in order. The wisdom arising from listening focuses only on the object of names, because it separately contemplates the meaning without abandoning the letters. The wisdom arising from thinking focuses on the object of names and meanings, because sometimes letters lead to meaning, and sometimes meaning leads to letters, letters

Because it is not completely abandoned, it is possible to separately recognize the meaning. It is only focused on the object of meaning of the wisdom arising from meditation, just like abandoning the letters and only separately recognizing the meaning. For example, if someone wants to swim in a deep river with a strong current, then what was initially learned will not abandon the basis on which it depends. What has been learned but not yet mastered, sometimes it is abandoned, and sometimes it is held. What has been learned and is well mastered, even without relying on the basis, can reach the other shore by its own power, just like these three kinds of wisdom are also like that, some say. Some say that if that is the case, then the wisdom arising from thinking will not manifest, because if it belongs to both focusing on the name and focusing on the meaning, then in order, it will become the wisdom arising from hearing and meditation. This is Vasubandhu repeating the words of other teachers to refute the Sarvastivadins. Thus, if we examine the characteristics of these three, there is nothing more important than separately showing their differences, just like yogis rely on obtaining the correct teachings, and the special wisdom that arises is called the wisdom arising from hearing. Relying on the intellect of thinking, the special wisdom that arises is called the wisdom arising from thinking. Relying on meditation and contemplation, the special wisdom that arises is called the wisdom arising from meditation. Among them, saying "arising from them" is to show that these three kinds of special wisdom are manifested from the three causes of hearing, thinking, etc. For example, sentient beings and cows in the world, in order, show that they are manifested from food and grass. When Vasubandhu explained the meaning of each division, he said, for example, food makes life manifest, and grass makes the storehouse manifest. Extensive explanation is the *Treatise on the Mixture of Minds* and *Correct Reasoning*.

And it is in accordance with. It comes from the Great Vibhasha, but because of its abundance, it is not mentioned here. The sutra masters' treatises are established only in that treatise, as it is said, whatever is understood from the words is the wisdom of hearing. Whatever is understood from the meaning of the intention is the wisdom of thinking. From the nature of those two wisdoms, from the arising of joy in the mind, to the arising of knowledge of reality from the collected mind, is the wisdom of meditation, like this. Furthermore, in the chapter on the three kinds of wisdom in that very treatise, it says, whatever arises from the twelve branches of scripture is called the wisdom of hearing. Whatever thinks about the meaning of the twelve branches of scripture is called the wisdom of thinking. After thinking, whatever is known to be practiced as it is taught, and whatever becomes directly visible, is called the wisdom of meditation. Practicing as it is taught means that from that mind, the arising and destruction of the five aggregates are seen. It is explained in detail in that very text. Here, if it is combined with the teachings of the Great Vehicle, it is mostly in accordance with what Master Vasubandhu taught. Therefore, in the Sutra on Teaching the Upasaka Vows, it says: Wisdom is of three kinds: born of hearing, born of thinking, and born of meditation. Whatever is obtained from letters is called born of hearing. Whatever is obtained from thinking is called born of thinking. Whatever is obtained from meditation is called born of meditation. That is what is said. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Treatise on the Stages of Yoga Practice, it says: The wisdom born of hearing means that hearing is hearing through listening. That is, the ear faculty produces ear consciousness, because the words expressed are heard. The nature of the mind and mental factors that possess the wisdom of knowing the words and meanings born of hearing, and the corresponding wisdom. Thinking is to contemplate, to contemplate the teachings, to generate wisdom, to contemplate the Dharma and
