In this context, it is said that all dharmas possess two meanings. The first is their own nature, such as gods and humans, eyes and ears, etc., like stating their own nature, which is called name. That name is also said to be consciousness because it arises from consciousness. In the true sense, although all dharmas are beyond words, they are called nominal because they are merely imputed. What is a word? The second explanation of words is shown by "What is a word?" and so on. This is also a question and answer, this is the question. Like this, what is the establishment of the place where the meaning of defilement and purification is followed, and the establishment of what can be held for the collection of those names? This is the second true answer, like this, the imputed dharma separated from the collection of those names is the meaning of expressing the difference between defilement and purification, and the nature of the word is the place to be said, so it is called a place. Because it can summarize the meaning of what is said and is not empty, it is called the holder. Alternatively, the meaning of the place is like this, because it can show it very well by relying on the meaning of the word, so it is called a place. What is a letter? The third explanation of letters is shown by "What is a letter?" and so on. This is also a question and answer, this is the question. Like this, what is the letter of the place of those two? This is the second true answer, like this, although the letter cannot be said, it is the place of those. If it is separated from the letter, neither can be manifested because of accomplishment. Although those three forms have differences, in Indian language, translating "nama" as "name" is a compliant meaning, because it is compliant with the meaning of what is said. That name also has inconsistent explanations in the treatises, so in the Great Treatise on Separate Explanations, it is because of three meanings, like this, it is said to be following, calling, and obtaining. Therefore, in that treatise itself

Why is it called 'name'? It is said: 'Name' is also called 'following', also called 'calling', also called 'attaining'. Among them, 'following' means to go and be in accordance with what has been done. 'Calling' means to set up that thing and respond as desired. 'Attaining' means that after making word chapters and explanations, the meaning is attained. It is said that in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya, it says: 'It is the conventional expression of the nature of all conditioned things.' The Abhidharmasamuccaya also teaches the same. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, it says: 'The conventional expression of nature is like this: whatever is expressed, such as gods, humans, eyes, ears, etc.' It is said that the commentary also mostly agrees with this. In the Yogācārabhūmiśāstra, it says: 'What is the meaning of 'name'? It is called 'name' because it makes it possible to understand well in common among various things. It is also called 'name' because it is correctly called a name.' It is said that the commentary also agrees with this. If translated into Indian language as 'pada', it means 'after', for example, just as one knows it is an elephant from the footprint of an elephant. Similarly, it is also shown that having four words becomes a verse. If translated according to meaning, it is called 'word'. The explanations of 'word' also differ among the treatises. In the Mahāvibhāṣāśāstra, it says: 'Because it fully shows the meaning, it is called 'word'.' In the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya, it says: 'What is the collection of words? For example, it is the nature of the conventional expression of the differences of all dharmas.' The Abhidharmasamuccaya also teaches the same. In the Abhidharmasamuccaya, it says: 'The conventional expression of difference is like this: the meaning shown by things like 'all conditioned things are impermanent' and 'all sentient beings will eventually die'.

It appears that the treatises "Vibhajyavāda" and "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra" also explain it in a way that is mostly consistent with this. Furthermore, the "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra" states that it is called "name" because it takes the end of names and clearly shows the meaning that is not manifest. The treatise "Vibhajyavāda" also states the same. In Sanskrit, byañjana (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) is translated as "letter," which is a formal term. In Sanskrit, akṣara (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思) is translated as "alphabet," which is a common term. Because there is a risk of not understanding that "letter" and "alphabet" are the same, some say that "letter is alphabet." The treatise "Abhidharmasamuccaya" states, "The collection of alphabets is like this: the collection of alphabets is designated as the place of those two alphabets." In the explanation of this, it says that the place of those two alphabets is like this: the alphabets that have become the place of technical terms of the distinction of self-nature, such as a, i, u (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思), and so on. A letter is the meaning of obscuring, because it obscures those two. A letter can also be said to be clarifying, because it clarifies the meaning. This can also be said to be an alphabet, because there is no different usage. Why is that? For example, the eye is called the eye, and apart from that name, there are other synonyms such as clarifying and guiding. Because there are changes and uses, therefore, because of those, it similarly fully shows its characteristics. The alphabets such as a, i (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思), and so on are not like that, because apart from the distinction of a, i (藏文,梵文天城体,梵文罗马拟音,汉语字面意思), and so on, other distinctions fully show these alphabets. It is said to be an alphabet for those that are used without difference. That which is used without difference is like this: it does not become other. It is said that the treatises "Pañcaskandhaprakaraṇa," "Vibhajyavāda," and "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra" also say the same. Furthermore, the treatise "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra" states that it is called an alphabet because it clarifies after the name and word, the treatise
