Whatever is attention, that is the reason for equanimity, which is called the third display of the nature of equanimity. Thus, whether one is focused solely on tranquility, or solely on insight, or even on the path of union, when the two afflictions of sinking and excitement cause complete affliction, then whatever effortless attention and spontaneous attention arise, those are called the reason for equanimity. Because tranquility and insight are focused, and each is separated from the two obscurations of conformity and non-conformity with sinking and excitement, it is also called equanimity. If asked, what is the difference between effortless and spontaneous arising? The answer is: Although the nature of the aspect is similar, that which is initially manifested and accomplished without effort is called effortless. Later, when one becomes completely accustomed, it is called spontaneous arising because it arises naturally. As it is said in the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness-Only, from the section on displaying the nature of equanimity, that equality, quiescence, and spontaneous accomplishment are the nature of the differences between the first, middle, and last stages, so it is here as well. If asked, what is the nature of these three dharmas? The answer is: Tranquility is the nature of samadhi, superior seeing is the nature of vipashyana, and equanimity is From previous lineages, there are two explanations. Some say that it is the nature of the union of tranquility and insight, because it is free from sinking and excitement. Others say that it is the nature of equanimity from those eleven dharmas. Therefore, in the Treatise on the Establishment of Consciousness-Only, it is said that equanimity is the nature of the mind's equality, quiescence, and spontaneous accomplishment of the three powers of diligence, and that it has the function of abiding in extreme peace as an antidote to sinking and excitement. Therefore, it is evident that it is the nature of equanimity. Although there are these two explanations, the latter explanation is better. Here is tranquil

What is said about attending to quiescence, insight, and equanimity is a proximate explanation. For example, although the four mindfulnesses are called mindfulness, their nature is wisdom. If insight is thorough apprehension, then why, in the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice, are the four aspects, namely quiescence, insight, thorough apprehension, and equanimity, distinguished and explained? Answer: Whatever is thorough apprehension is undoubtedly insight, but some aspects of insight are not thorough apprehension, such as when it has not become an antidote to sinking, etc. The characteristics of these distinctions are that in the Treatise on the Grounds of Yoga Practice, quiescence, insight, thorough apprehension, and equanimity are each explained as having three characteristics, such as explaining quiescence, the sign of quiescence, and the time of quiescence, etc. Furthermore, Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, how do bodhisattvas who cultivate quiescence and insight truly know each dharma? How do they truly know each meaning? From this point onwards is the twelfth, which explains the door of thoroughly distinguishing the true knowledge of each dharma and meaning. This is also divided into two aspects: explaining the true knowledge of each dharma and meaning, and from the words "Furthermore, Bodhisattva Maitreya" up to "how does one eliminate the signs by means of attention," it explains the elimination of the signs. The first is also divided into two aspects: starting from what should be completely known, it explains the true knowledge of each dharma and meaning, and furthermore, Bodhisattva Maitreya said to the Bhagavan: Bhagavan, how does the wisdom arising from hearing truly know each meaning? From this point onwards, starting from what should be completely known, it explains the true knowledge of each meaning.
