In order to obtain the excellent and vast fruit, one should diligently practice meditation, which is a concluding statement. This shows that one should not be content, but should practice meditation. These five types of meditation, although not clearly explained in the authoritative scriptures in terms of their essential differences, if explained by distinguishing their general characteristics, then all are the essence of samadhi, wisdom, and the Dharma in which they operate together. In one different commentary on the "Compendium on the Great Vehicle," it is said that in order, they are wisdom, characteristics, correct view, diligence, and the initial essence. The details should be understood as explained in that very treatise. In the commentary on the "Compendium on the Great Vehicle" translated by Xuanzang, and in the translation adapted from it, there is no such distinction. In the treatise "Abhidharma Samuccaya," only the names of these five types of meditation are listed, without detailed explanations. Therefore, in that very treatise, it is said that by meditating on these five types in this way, one will obtain five fruits. What are these five? They are: meditation that is in accordance with the quiescence of characteristics, meditation that is in accordance, meditation without characteristics, meditation without effort, and meditation that is contrary to characteristics. In the "Abhidharma Samuccaya," the saying "meditation on the quiescence of characteristics" is the same as the "meditation on blazing" taught in the "Compendium on the Great Vehicle." The saying "meditation that is in accordance" is the same as the saying "meditation on resemblance." The sayings "meditation without characteristics" and "meditation without effort" are the same as the saying "meditation on the absence of characteristics and spontaneous accomplishment." The saying "meditation that is contrary to characteristics" is the same as the saying "meditation on non-contentment." Although these two treatises are different, the teacher Realization Lion established the reasoning separately, and thus established the order of these five meditations. This is because when a yogi first enters yoga, they cause the characteristics to be quiescent and blazing, therefore blazing is mentioned first.

Since this is also what is said in this very sutra. Therefore, when Master Vasubandhu composed the treatise "Compendium on the Great Vehicle," he quoted the complete wording of this sutra, but did not provide an explanation. Masters Asanga and Svabhavasunyata each provided explanations separately. Because they explained the five meanings, one should rely on these two treatises to correctly explain the sutra's words. When applying the mind, destroying all the causes of bad rebirths in every instant, etc., this is the second, explaining the arising of conditions separately. This is also divided into five aspects because it explains the five types of conditions. This is the first explanation of the result of destroying the causes of bad rebirths. In the "Samdhinirmocana Sutra," it says that in every instant, all the causes of the afflicted body are destroyed. Master Asanga composed the treatise based on this sutra. In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it is said that the seeds of afflictive obscurations and cognitive obscurations that have been cultivated since beginningless time are the causes of bad rebirths. These two aggregates of obscurations are destroyed in every instant by the power of shamatha and vipassana wisdom that focuses on mixed dharmas. Here, because the main focus is on destroying the aggregates of obscurations, it is also called destruction. Because it causes the afflictions to greatly diminish, it is also called destruction. In the commentary by Master Svabhavasunyata, it is said that the alaya-vijnana is called the cause of bad rebirths, and at that time, the accumulation diminishes and is destroyed, so it is called destruction. Here, if we explain the difference between the two treatises, Master Vasubandhu says that the seed is the cause of bad rebirths, because it has no function. It is also said to be a place, because it appears as a place. Because the seed is permanently abandoned, it is called destruction. Because the manifested seed is completely suppressed, it is called causing it to greatly diminish. Master Svabhavasunyata speaks of the manifested consciousness.
