Following on the ground, following after the Dharma, faith and understanding, attainment by sight, realization by body, liberation by wisdom, and liberation by both parts. As it is said, one who abides in the state of the path of seeing, who is dull of faculty, is called a follower of faith. One who is sharp of faculty is called a follower of the Dharma. One who abides in the state of the path of cultivation, who is dull of faculty, is called faith and understanding. One who is sharp of faculty is called attainment by sight. One who has attained cessation samadhi is called realization by body. In the state of no more learning, one who has not yet attained cessation samadhi is called liberation by wisdom. One who has attained cessation samadhi is called liberation by both parts. Thus it is said. In detail, it should be understood as explained in the treatises. According to the tenets of the Sutra School, faith and following after the Dharma are both preliminary to the path of seeing. One who abides on the path of seeing is called one who practices without characteristics. Therefore, it is established only by this treatise that there are three kinds of individuals who follow the stream-enterer: the follower of faith, the follower of the Dharma, and the practitioner without characteristics. Among them, the follower of faith is one who has not attained the knowledge of the emptiness of persons and selflessness, because he explicitly believes in the words of the Buddha and follows the words of the Buddha, he is called a follower of faith. The follower of the Dharma is one who has attained the knowledge of selflessness, abides in the four roots of virtue, and follows the Dharma, he is called a follower of the Dharma. These two individuals who follow, having entered the path of seeing, are called practitioners without characteristics because they see the truth of cessation. Thus it is said. If this explanation is combined, then faith and following after the Dharma are clearly preliminary to the path of seeing. This

Even when combined with the teachings of the Mahayana, their individual explanations differ. In the commentary on the Noble Perfection of Wisdom, it is said that among the fifteen moments of the mind on the path of seeing, whoever has sharp faculties is called a follower of Dharma, and whoever has dull faculties is called a follower of faith. These two individuals are also called those who practice without characteristics. In the Compendium of Abhidharma, it is said that the followers of faith and the followers of Dharma both abide on the path of accumulation and the path of seeing. Among the fifteen moments of the mind, whoever has dull faculties is called a follower of faith, and whoever has sharp faculties is called a follower of Dharma. Whoever abides from the sixteenth moment is also called one who has attained through seeing. Therefore, in that very treatise, it says: The follower of faith is like this: one who has accumulated merit, with dull faculties, follows the teachings of others, and strives to realize the truth. The follower of Dharma is like this: one who has accumulated merit, with sharp faculties, follows the Dharma that masters the truth, and strives to perfectly realize the truth. Faith-liberation is like this: when a follower of faith reaches the state of fruition. Attainment through seeing is like this: when a follower of Dharma reaches the state of fruition. Therefore, in the state of fruition, they are called faith-liberation and attainment through seeing. Therefore, it should be understood that abiding on the path of seeing, the stage of the fifteen moments of the mind, is the initial follower of faith and follower of Dharma. It is also said in the Explanation and the Yogacarabhumi-sastra. In the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it is said that whatever is before the path of seeing is called the follower of faith and the follower of Dharma, and whoever abides on the path of seeing is called one who practices without characteristics. This teaching is also not contradictory. Why is that? The individual who practices without characteristics, and the follower of faith and the follower of Dharma

If it is said that the two people who follow after are also forerunners of the path of seeing, then it would be contradictory. If it is not said that way, then faith and following the Dharma also belong to the path of seeing. Bodhisattvas do not necessarily have explicit scriptural basis, but if it is explained in terms of meaning, combining it with those who are before the ground and those who abide on the ground, there is no contradiction, because faith and aspiration, etc., are established separately. Bodhisattva Maitreya again asked the Blessed One, saying: Blessed One, you have said that there is calm abiding and insight that focuses on unmixed dharmas, and you have also said that there is calm abiding and insight that focuses on mixed dharmas. From here onwards, this shows the second door of focusing on mixed and unmixed dharmas. This can also be divided into two: asking and answering. Asking is also divided into two: showing the place of asking and asking according to what is shown, this is the first. How is it that calm abiding and insight focus on unmixed dharmas? How is it that calm abiding and insight focus on mixed dharmas? This is the second asking according to what is shown, there are two intentions in asking, which is only expressed by the sutra itself. The Blessed One told Bodhisattva Maitreya: Son of good family, how does a Bodhisattva hold the Dharma such as the Sutra Pitaka, and separately focus on the dharmas that are thought about, and practice calm abiding and insight, that is called calm abiding and insight that focuses on unmixed dharmas, and so on. The second is the Tathagata's true answer, which can also be divided into two: answering the unmixed object, and showing the unmixed object, this is the first. This sutra passage can also be divided into two: explanation and conclusion. There are also two explanations for this sutra passage: Some say that the unmixed object is because the twelve parts of scripture are shown differently from each other.
