It is the nature of the root of virtue that is without (Tibetan: མེད་པའི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: abhāva, Sanskrit Romanization: abhāva, Chinese literal meaning: without), because everything is a dharma that cherishes compassion for sentient beings. Among these four aspects, love is solely without hatred. The two immeasurables below it are one side of being without (Tibetan: མེད་པའི་, Sanskrit Devanagari: abhāva, Sanskrit Romanization: abhāva, Chinese literal meaning: without). Equanimity is one side of non-attachment and without hatred. Furthermore, the samadhi that corresponds to these, as well as the mind and mental factors, and their retinues, whatever these are, are also the nature of the four immeasurables, it is said. The detailed explanation should be understood as it appears from the teachings on characteristics. In this chapter, previously, quiescence was taught first and insight was taught later, then why in these two preceding doors is insight taught first, and quiescence taught later? Answer: There are two kinds of order, the first is the order of yogic practice, that is, quiescence is taught first and insight is taught later. The second is the order of terminology, because the meaning is not fixed, therefore here it is taught according to the aspect of terminology. Another way of saying it is that there are two meanings to yogic practice, the first is that insight arises relying on quiescence. The second is that quiescence is skillfully guided by the power of insight, therefore it is said in the treatise "Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra" that because quiescence serves as the basis, insight will quickly become completely purified, and because insight serves as the basis, quiescence will increase and expand, therefore, there is no mutual contradiction in meaning. The thirty-ninth fascicle. Bodhisattva Maitreya again asked the Blessed One thus: Blessed One, as you said, the quiescence and insight that abide in the Dharma, and also the quiescence and insight that do not abide in the Dharma, from here onwards, is the ninth, the door that shows the quiescence and insight that rely on and do not rely on the Dharma. This is also divided into three: the door that shows abiding in the Dharma and not abiding in the Dharma, and the door of teaching that focuses on mixed and unmixed dharmas, and the door of teaching the distinctions that focus on mixed dharmas. This is the first.

Oh, therefore, this can be divided into two types: asking questions and answering. Asking questions can also be divided into two types: stating the nature of reliance and asking questions based on the teachings themselves. This is the first type. How are śamatha and vipaśyanā that abide in the Dharma? How are śamatha and vipaśyanā that do not abide in the Dharma? This is the second type, asking questions based on the teachings themselves. There are two intentions in asking questions, which are only expressed by the sutra itself. The Blessed One said to the Bodhisattva Maitreya: 'Son of good family, a Bodhisattva who has previously attained śamatha and vipaśyanā through the meaning of the characteristics of the Dharma that has been received and contemplated is called śamatha and vipaśyanā that abide in the Dharma.' From this point onwards is the second part, showing the Tathagata's true answer. This can also be divided into two types: explaining truthfully as asked, and from 'relying on the Dharma' onwards, showing abiding in the Dharma and not abiding in the Dharma based on faith. The first type is further divided into two types: showing abiding in the Dharma and showing not abiding in the Dharma. This is showing abiding in the Dharma, that is, Bodhisattvas who have attained śamatha and vipaśyanā through the meaning of the twelve parts of the scriptures that have been received by the wisdom of hearing and contemplated by the wisdom of contemplation, are said to have śamatha and vipaśyanā that abide in the Dharma. A Bodhisattva who does not rely on the characteristics of the Dharma that has been received and contemplated, but relies on the instructions and subsequent teachings of others, and thereby attains śamatha and vipaśyanā of these meanings, and so on, this is the second type showing not abiding in the Dharma. This can also be divided into three types: briefly showing, extensively explaining, and general conclusion. This is the first type, briefly showing, that is, Bodhisattvas who have received and contemplated in order to subdue their minds, and do not rely on the meaning of the Dharma that has been contemplated, but rely on the power of what others have taught, and thereby attain śamatha and vipaśyanā of these meanings. For example,
