The classification should be understood as stated in the Great Treatise on Specific Explanation. Therefore, from that very treatise, because of the meaning it intends, it is said in the sutras that cultivating the four immeasurables, the end of loving-kindness is up to Sudarshana. The end of compassion is up to the sphere of infinite space. The end of joy is up to the sphere of infinite consciousness. The end of equanimity is up to the sphere of nothingness. How can the dharma of the form realm lead to the fruit of the formless realm? Furthermore, if there is no compassion in the four dhyanas, then why is the end of cultivating loving-kindness only Sudarshana? Some think that this sutra passage is known by the lord of loving-kindness, and therefore some explain this meaning in this way. The venerable Katyayanaputra once asked Sharma Tarta about this matter, and that venerable one, contemplating, entered into a very peaceful samadhi. The next day, he explained this matter during the day. At that time, Katyayanaputra also entered into a very peaceful samadhi and did not meet him, and both passed into nirvana. Therefore, it is said that until today, no one has been able to explain this matter. The Vaibhashikas think that this sutra is spoken with regard to similarity, and it should be understood in this way. Like this, the dharma of the feeling of pleasure is similar to loving-kindness, because loving-kindness exists in the form of giving pleasure, and pleasure reaches up to Sudarshana, because it does not exist on the higher grounds. Therefore, it is said that the end of cultivating loving-kindness is Sudarshana. Whatever is not separated from the dharma of suffering is similar to compassion, because compassion exists in the form of delivering from suffering, and the body with form is the cause of experiencing coarse suffering. Therefore, those who have a body have things like beheading, and the near attainment of the sphere of infinite space is complete disgust with bodies with form. Therefore, it is said that the end of cultivating compassion is up to the sphere of infinite space.

The Dharma of bliss that has been thoroughly cultivated is similar to joy, because joy exists as if distinguishing the aspect of bliss. And what is the increase of bliss from thoroughly cultivating the sphere of infinite consciousness? That is because it has become the gateway that focuses on the aspect of one's own infinite consciousness. Because the nature of infinite consciousness is extremely increased and transformed into bliss, therefore the end of cultivating joy is up to the sphere of infinite consciousness, as it is said. Whatever Dharma is completely abandoned is similar to equanimity, because equanimity is like entering the aspect of complete abandonment. Because the sphere of nothingness, by means of clinging, completely perfects the aspect of abandoning the infinite. The end of cultivating equanimity is up to the sphere of nothingness, as it is said. From there, there appears content that is widely explained in three ways. In the Sutra Pitaka, it is established that the four immeasurables are all of the nature of wisdom. Therefore, from the establishment of that treatise itself, are these three also loving-kindness? It is said: The distinction of the mind of loving-kindness is only threefold, that is, in this way, with the equality of mind, knowing friendliness and abandoning the mind of enmity, one equally abides in the mind of loving-kindness towards all sentient beings. Compassion and joy are also the same. Therefore, I previously showed that the four immeasurables, such as compassion and joy, are all of the nature of wisdom by the distinction of generating the mind of loving-kindness. Here, if combined with the teachings of the Mahayana, the individual statements are inconsistent. From the treatise *Abhidharmasamuccaya*, it is said: These four immeasurables are all of the nature of samadhi and wisdom, and the mind and mental factors that correspond to them. In the treatise *Vibhanga*, it is said: Loving-kindness is the nature of the root of virtue without anger. Compassion is the nature of the root of virtue without harm. Joy is the nature of the root of virtue without jealousy. Equanimity is non-attachment and...
