Or individually observing complete dedication or complete disgust, etc., or called all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, or called all conditioned phenomena are suffering, or called all phenomena are without self, or called nirvana is eternally peaceful, this is the second extensive explanation. Through the power of subsequent instruction, from these five completely purified objects, for meditating on impurity, the individual observation is as follows: complete dedication and complete disgust, etc. The so-called "etc." includes from the object of cultivating loving-kindness, similarly, it also includes the objects of mindfulness close placement of individual characteristics. From "all conditioned phenomena are impermanent" to "no self," it indicates the mindfulness close placement of common characteristics. The above-mentioned yogas, that is, for the object of mindfulness close placement, individually observing from impermanence to no self, etc., these are the mindfulness close placement of common characteristics. Similarly, through the unpolluted yoga, for suffering and impermanence, etc., or for the state of nirvana of the non-learner, the individual observation of peace. Or, the so-called complete dedication, etc., arises from the yoga of meditating on impurity. The yoga of nine thoughts, the yoga of nine thoughts is extensively elaborated in the commentary on the "Noble Mañjuśrī-nāma-saṃgīti." For all conditioned phenomena, meditating on impermanence, etc., this is the Dharma seal, to determine the nature of Dharma, and with the unchanging meaning, it is called the Dharma seal. Therefore, it is said in the "Sūtrālaṃkāra": "The four Dharma seals are the Dharma seal of all conditioned phenomena are impermanent, the Dharma seal of all conditioned phenomena are suffering, the Dharma seal of all phenomena are without self, and the Dharma seal of nirvana is peaceful, these are called the four Dharma seals." The sūtra collected and given in the Bodhisattva Piṭaka says there are four Dharma sūtras, this is a brief indication.

The characteristic of "impermanence" is the characteristic that summarizes conditioned dharmas. The characteristic of "suffering" is the characteristic that indicates the essence of contaminated dharmas. The characteristic of "no-self" is the characteristic that indicates the essence of all dharmas. "Nirvana," which is called "peace," is the characteristic that indicates the essence of the unconditioned, as it is taught. In the Treatise on Establishing Consciousness-Only and the commentary on the Holy Perfection of Wisdom, it is said that there are "three seals of the Dharma," which are taught through the seal of suffering. The meaning of the four Dharma sutras should be understood as explained in the Sutra of the Bodhisattva Treasury, the Sutra of Well-Spoken Discipline, the Treatise on the Compendium of Grounds, and the Treatise on the Grounds for Yogic Practice. Whatever shamatha and vipashyana are in accordance with this are called shamatha and vipashyana that do not abide in the Dharma. This is called the third general conclusion, which is merely a different expression. Because shamatha and vipashyana are attained by relying on the Dharma. I say that the bodhisattva who follows the Dharma is of sharp faculties, etc., this is the second, starting from faith and Dharma, showing abiding in the Dharma and not abiding in the Dharma. This also has two aspects: explaining relying on the Dharma and explaining not relying on the Dharma. This is the first, like this, whatever shamatha and vipashyana are attained by relying on the Dharma, because they are of sharp faculties, the Tathagata shows them as following the Dharma. In order to attain shamatha and vipashyana without relying on the Dharma, I say that the bodhisattva who follows faith is of dull faculties, this is the second, explaining not relying on the Dharma, whatever shamatha and vipashyana are attained by relying on the teachings of others, because they are of dull faculties, the Tathagata shows them as following faith. Because the explanations of faith and following the Dharma are different, the treatises of the Sarvastivada school say this, in the sutra it says: there are seven types of people, following faith.
