Those who have the seeds of permanent obscuration are established as individuals who possess the lineage of not completely liberating from suffering. Those who are not like that are established as individuals who possess the lineage of completely liberating from suffering. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the treatise *Ornament of the Sutras*, it says: There are two types of those without lineage: those who do not liberate from suffering in consideration of the end of time, and those who never liberate from suffering. There are also four types of phenomena that do not liberate from suffering in consideration of the end of time: those who solely engage in evil deeds, those who abandon all virtuous dharmas, those who have no roots of virtue in the direction of liberation, and those whose virtuous causes are small and incomplete. Phenomena that never liberate from suffering are like this: because there is no cause, they are without the lineage of liberating from suffering, that is, individuals who completely engage in samsara and do not seek liberation from suffering. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in one of the differing commentaries on the treatise *Compendium of the Great Vehicle*, it says: "With obscurations and without cause, All realms of sentient beings, Abiding in two certainties, The Buddhas have no power." Thus it is said. In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it says that sentient beings who do not have the lineage of liberating from suffering are said to be without cause. The Buddhas also do not act to liberate them from suffering in this situation, nor do they act to exert influence through miraculous powers. Because they are attached to samsara and do not have faith in liberating from suffering. Thus it is said. In the *Compendium of the Great Vehicle* translated by Master Xuanzang, it says: "In all sentient beings' realms, With obscurations and without cause, Because two kinds of certainty enter, The Buddhas have no power." Thus it is said. In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it says that those in the realm of sentient beings who do not have the dharma of liberating from suffering are said to have deficient causes. This shows that they do not have the cause of liberating from suffering. Because they do not have the lineage, the Buddhas also cannot exert influence on them. This is a concluding statement, that is, it is also said in this way in one of the differing commentaries on the *Compendium of the Great Vehicle*.

Homage. In the commentary of Acarya Asanga, it is said that because they possess the obscurations of afflictions, karma, and maturation, they are called 'possessing obscurations.' Because they lack the cause and lineage for nirvana, they are called 'lacking the cause.' The Buddhas also do not exercise their dominion to lead such beings as mentioned above to nirvana, as stated in the extensive commentary. Furthermore, in the explanation of the Buddha-ground, the meaning of the five lineages should be understood as before. Among them, the fifth lineage, because it lacks the cause for generating qualities, never has a time for nirvana. Moreover, in the commentary on the Noble Ten Bhumis Sutra, it is said that those who are determined by the five inverted aggregates will not change into nirvana. Combining these teachings, it is shown that beings without lineage do not have the cause for nirvana, and the lower two vehicles will definitely not attain Buddhahood. If that is the case, why is it said to be the One Vehicle? How should those scriptures previously cited as sources be understood and explained? Answer: As it is said in the Noble Great Nirvana Sutra: 'Son of lineage, the term 'self' (Tibetan: བདག, Sanskrit Devanagari: आत्म, Sanskrit Romanization: ātma, Chinese literal meaning: self) refers to the meaning of the Tathagatagarbha.' Furthermore, all sentient beings possess the Buddha-nature, which is permanent and unchanging.' Moreover, in the Treatise on the Jewel Nature, it is said, 'How is it shown that all sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha?' Answer: 'Relying on the Dharmakaya, the equal nature of all Buddhas, it should be known that all sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha.' Therefore, all sentient beings possess the Tathagatagarbha. All that is taught in the above scriptures is the very nature of the Dharmakaya, the Buddha-nature, so all five lineages also possess the Buddha-nature. Furthermore, in the Noble Great Nirvana Sutra, everything said from 'For example, someone' to 'will be obtained' is the very nature of conduct, so it will definitely be obtained.
