Distinguishing them, the idea shown by verses and the correct explanation by verses. This is the first. Also, these verses are shown because the Bodhisattva clearly explains for deep understanding, and to show the meaning of non-duality, etc., by repeating them. The reason for saying "to show it again" is that four cases appear in the commentary of the true teacher. The first is that the words are repeated but the meaning is not repeated, such as the word "gཽ་", which can be used to derive nine meanings such as eyes. The second is that the meaning is repeated but the words are not repeated, such as saying that Indra has a thousand eyes. The third is that neither the words nor the meaning are repeated, such as saying gods and humans. The fourth is that both the words and the meaning are repeated, such as summarizing the previous meaning with verses. Here, it is only to combine with the fourth case, so the words are shown repeatedly. In the previous tradition, it is said that there are only three cases, because it is brief, this third case is not explained. The verses that appear in the twelve branches of scripture are also of two types: verses recited with melody and verses. Therefore, in the treatise Abhidharmasamuccaya, verses recited with melody are: in the middle and end of the sutra, verses are recited with melody. Or, to understand the upright sutra, they are recited with melody. Verses are like this: combining verses from the sutras, there are two lines, three lines, four lines, five lines, six lines, etc. Here, it is to combine with the verses recited with melody, so it is said "to show it again". The necessity of showing the verses, if combined with the true explanation of the teacher, in short, is for six reasons: for forgetfulness, for those who come later, for acceptance, for easy understanding, for sharp and dull intelligence being different.

Because sentient beings have different inclinations, and in order to excellently demonstrate the skillful means of the speaker. Therefore, the teacher said in the "True Explanation" that in order for the assembly of listeners who are distracted, and those who have forgotten the previous meaning due to other circumstances, to regain it, the verses were spoken. Furthermore, in order for those who come later to hear what they have not heard before, the verses were spoken. Furthermore, in order to make it easy to receive and grasp, the single sentences of the sutras and the verses were spoken. If only the verses were spoken, and not the single sentences of the sutras, then because the meaning is subtle, it would be difficult to receive. If only the single sentences of the sutras were spoken, and not the verses, then the meaning would become scattered and difficult to grasp, so in order to make it easy to receive and grasp, the sutras and verses were spoken completely. Furthermore, in order to benefit two different types of people, the sutras and verses were spoken completely. In this way, some people have dull faculties and some have sharp faculties. If those with dull faculties are shown in brief and not widely differentiated, they will not be able to understand the meaning. Therefore, in order to benefit such people, the sutras were widely spoken; and in order to generate wisdom and benefit those with sharp faculties, the characteristics of the meaning were briefly summarized, so that they themselves could differentiate and fully understand. Just as the noble Shariputra, having heard one correct meaning, was able to differentiate it into ten aspects. If it were explained in detail, it would not benefit such people. Therefore, in order to benefit both sharp and dull faculties, the sutras and verses were spoken completely. Furthermore, there are two types of sentient beings, some like to explain, because the power of loving-kindness and compassion is very strong; some like to practice, because the mind is very secluded and peaceful. In order to benefit these two types of people, the sutras and verses were spoken. Furthermore, in order to excellently demonstrate the skillful means of the speaker, like this, summarizing from the extensive and expanding from the concise.
