Distinguishing differences, such as me, blue, or white, is called the perception of difference. Therefore, the ignorant generate two kinds of perception. When arising, the nature of both the general and specific characteristics, such as horses, should be understood as before, which is what is to be shown. As they see and hear, they firmly grasp and cling to it, thinking, "This is true, and the others are foolish and false," without subsequently establishing names. In order to discern things in this way, they also subsequently establish names for them, which shows that the fourth cause of understanding is the cause of the arising of names. This is also shown in two ways: first, by the power of wisdom, realizing that things are not real, therefore not generating names of reality. Second, from "in order to discern things in this way" onwards, by the power of wisdom, realizing that things are without inherent existence, therefore generating names merely as designations. That is, they do not need to closely examine and dwell on it later, which is the fifth exhortation not to examine, because in this way, they truly understand by the power of wisdom. Similarly, those beings who are ordinary beings with the nature of children, who have not attained the wisdom of the noble ones that transcends the world, etc., this shows the second, which is the same as the Dharma category. This is again divided into two: showing the holding of ignorance and reality, and those beings, etc., showing that those who understand realize that things are not real. The first is again divided into five: showing the person who clings to the present, showing the ununderstood object, showing the reality that generates the present clinging, showing the arising of names after the present clinging, and exhorting them to be real. This is the first combined with showing the person who clings to the present. To this, "similarly" is said to accomplish being the same as the Dharma category, so "similarly" is said. Present cling

A person with karma also has three names: sentient being, child, and ordinary person. Among them, the term "sentient being" has two meanings in brief. First, it is called "sentient being" because it generates various kinds of dharmas. As it is said in the commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā: "A sentient being is so called because it generates many dharmas such as the five aggregates, the twelve sense bases, the eighteen realms, the six realms, and the twelve links of dependent origination." The Mahāyāna sutra "Showing the Equality of Self-Nature" and the treatise "Commentary on the Compendium of the Mahāyāna" also explain it in a similar way, although there is one difference. Second, it is called "sentient being" because it takes many births. Therefore, it is said in the chapter of the Prajñāpradīpa: "For example, a sentient being is so called because it repeatedly takes birth." Furthermore, the commentary on the Vajracchedikā by the teacher Yangdag Denpa says: "A sentient being is so called because the former birth and the later birth continue without interruption." If that is the case, then it would be the same as "various cessations" which have the meaning of cessation of former and later births. The answer is: "In both cases, a sentient being is not established only by birth, nor is cessation not established." As explained in detail in the same text. The term "child" means an ignorant person. The term "ordinary person" means that it is called an ordinary person because it is accompanied by ignorance. If combined with the Śataśāstra, then the term "child ordinary person" refers to those who are born separately. Therefore, it is said in the same treatise: "Ordinary people are called child ordinary people." Furthermore, it is said in the same text: "All those who have views are not real, and they are called child ordinary people because their knowledge is very unclear." Among them, the term "becoming an ordinary person" is explained in the Mahāvibhāṣā: "Why is it called an ordi-

If asked, what is a "common person"? All noble ones have the same birth, but these are different from them, so they are called "common persons." If that is the case, then why aren't the noble ones also called "common persons" since they are born differently from each other? All noble ones understand the meaning of suchness in the same way, and their views and intentions are in harmony, so they are called "the same." Common people are not like that, because they are very pitiful and deserve to be scolded. It is inappropriate to find fault by using the term "common person." The venerable one said that because they are different from the true Dharma and discipline, they take birth, so they are called "common persons." It is as it appears in the Extensive Sutra. That is to say, it will be shown that those with the nature of common people either have attained the uncontaminated noble path of the three vehicles, or have not attained the noble path of the first ground, etc., and are attached to the appearance of existing as truly existent. The so-called "not understanding the inexpressible nature of all phenomena" refers to the second case, which is to show that the object is not comprehended. The so-called "inexpressible nature of all phenomena" means that the self-characteristics of all conditioned and unconditioned phenomena are free from names and expressions. Or, the suchness that is non-dual of conditioned and unconditioned phenomena is called inexpressible, which is not understanding the nature of phenomena. Those who see or hear conditioned and unconditioned phenomena think to themselves: whatever appears, whether conditioned or unconditioned, this undoubtedly exists as truly existent. The so-called "generating attachment" refers to the third case, which shows the generation of attachment. In this way, because childish common people do not understand the nature of phenomena, they are attached to conditioned phenomena, etc., as truly existent. It is like clinging to illusory elephants, etc., as if they were real elephants, etc. They firmly hold and cling to what they have seen and heard, thinking, "Only this is true, and the rest is ignorant and false," and then speak accordingly.
