is an example for students, who are the ignorant individuals. They, as they see and hear, firmly hold onto it as supreme and manifest attachment to it, and then name it, saying, "This is true, and the other is foolish and false." This shows the fourth cause of speech arising from manifest attachment. Thus, because they do not understand illusion, they grasp and manifest attachment to things as truly existing. If someone else says, "This is not truly existing," they will say, "These people are foolish and lying." Therefore, it is necessary to refute them, which indicates the fifth urging them to be truthful. Because of their ignorance, they do not understand illusion, so they cling to things as truly existing. Later, even if those illusions disappear, they must be thoroughly refuted to know that they are not true. Regarding this, sentient beings who are not children, not ignorant, possessing wisdom and a virtuous nature, those who possess that knowledge, etc., this shows the third example of those who have realized that it is not true. This can also be divided into five ways, to be understood by reversing the above, namely, showing the one who has realized, showing the object to be realized, truly showing the realization itself, showing the cause of realization giving rise to speech, and urging the need for further refutation. This is showing the one who has realized, and this is also shown in three ways. First, what sentient being? This shows the one who has realized, that is, the bodhisattva before the ground, or the bodhisattva abiding on the ground, merely a designation for the five aggregates. Second, not a child, not ignorant, this is the proximate cause for generating realization, that is, the root of virtue without ignorance. Third, possessing wisdom and a virtuous nature, this truly shows the nature of realization, that is, the nature of wisdom. This is what is grasped in the stage of the path of union before the ground, and

This is an example of gradually comprehending emptiness. Alternatively, it is said that those who abide on the ground possess knowledge from comprehending the nature of the two truths as non-dual. Grass, leaves, trees, pebbles, tiles, and so on, are called illusions and emanated objects, which indicates the second object to be understood. It should be understood as it appears in the sutra. When seeing and hearing, one thinks, "All these various groups of elephants are not real. Groups of horses, groups of chariots, groups of infantry, jewels, pearls, lapis lazuli, conches, coral, red coral, wealth, various grains, houses, and storehouses, all these are not real." This indicates the third thing to be understood, which is the true revelation of comprehension itself. This is also divided into two: revealing that the true object does not exist, and revealing that the object named by things such as objects is not non-existent. This is revealing that the true object does not exist, and it should be understood as it appears in the sutra. However, for the illusionary object that deceives the eyes, the notion of a group of elephants arises, as well as the notion of the distinctions of the group of elephants, up to the notion of wealth, various grains, houses, and storehouses, and the notion of the distinctions of their various forms, one thinks, "These exist," which indicates the second, that the named object is not non-existent. This sutra passage is also revealed in two ways: first, through the phrase "However, the illusionary object that deceives the eyes," it truly reveals that the merely similar object is not non-existent. Second, beginning with the word "what," it reveals the characteristics of falsehood, this is the first. Regarding the word "illusionary object," the explanations of the various schools are not consistent. The treatises of the Sarvastivada school, which are in accordance with correct knowledge, explain it as being like an emanation, because it is the power of samadhi. The true object that is similar to an emanation is the appearance to the eye.
