After making ten portions, (the sutra) says that the dharma that relies on wisdom within one's own body, and the dharma that exists by its own nature. Broadly speaking, it is just like arising from that (ten portions). The intention of that sutra is this: In the aspect of suchness, there are two meanings, namely, this inner self-realization, and whether the Tathagata appears or does not appear, the nature of self-essence is always present, therefore it is suchness, because it is apart from verbal expression, so it is not spoken. Therefore, in the four-fascicle "Lankavatara Sutra," it says: On whose night enlightenment is manifested, on whose night nirvana is entered, in between those two, I have not spoken even slightly. Because the dharma of self-realization exists, therefore I say this, there is no difference between me and those Buddhas. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the "Sutra Requested by the King of Men," it says: There is no hearing, no speaking, like the sky, dharma and dharmata are the same, hearing and speaking are the same, all dharmas are one and the same, that is suchness. Thus it is said. Furthermore, in the "Commentary on the Holy Vajra Cutter Sutra" composed by Master Vasubandhu, it says that if someone says that the Tathagatas preach the dharma, that is a slander against the Buddha, because he does not understand the meaning of what I said. What is the meaning of this? In the verse it says: How is the Buddha, so is the Dharma, although the two teachings are very different, but because they are not completely separated from the Dharmadhatu, the teaching has no self-essence. Among them, the connection of this (verse) is that the two are very different, referring to the teaching and meaning. Regarding this, the intention of this treatise is this: The Tathagata of the emanation body has no other self-essence apart from suchness, just as the Buddha has no other self-essence apart from suchness, similarly, the teaching and meaning are also proclaimed in this way. Second, the Tathagatas did not speak because they considered that there was no difference in the teachings of the Tathagatas. Therefore, in the "Commentary on the Holy Vajra Cutter Sutra," it says, how in the sutra

If someone asks, what does it mean that the Blessed One said, "Subhuti, the Tathagata has not taught the Dharma"? The answer is: any Dharma is taught solely by the Tathagata, and there is no other Buddha who has not taught it. Another explanation is that this refers to the Dharma that is written down, which the Tathagata did not teach. Therefore, in the four-fascicle Lankavatara Sutra, it says: The Tathagata does not teach the Dharma that is written down, because the existence and non-existence of letters are not discernible. On the other hand, he teaches the Dharma by non-literal means. If someone says that the Tathagata teaches the Dharma that is written down, that is a lie, because the nature of Dharma is separate from letters. Therefore, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas will not speak or teach a single letter. And so on, the sutra speaks extensively. Furthermore, it says in the same text: Mahamati, if all Dharmas are not taught, then the teachings will be destroyed. If the teachings are destroyed, then Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Shravakas will also disappear. If they disappear, then who will say what to whom? Combining the statements from the nine sutras mentioned above, although the Dharma that is written down is not taught, it is not the case that the non-literal Tripitaka scriptures are not taught either. Therefore, in the Vimalakirti Sutra, it says: There, the Dharma teacher also speaks, and does not speak, and the listener also does not hear, and does not attain. For example, just as an illusory person teaches the Dharma to an illusory person, one should teach the Dharma with such a mindset. Therefore, the two, speaking and not speaking, are not contradictory. Regarding the point of "teaching according to the differences of the Buddha-fields," it is like the Lankavatara Sutra says, the Buddha, taking the Buddha-fields as the main subject, teaches the ten kinds of differences in teaching the Dharma. From the initial teaching of the Dharma with words, to the final teaching of the Dharma with body language, all are taught. The ten-fascicle version of the same sutra also says: Bodhisattva Mahamati,
