The great earth said: "Bhagavan, if there is expression, then things must also exist; if things do not exist, then expression also does not exist." The Bhagavan said: "Great Wisdom, even if things do not exist, expression does exist. For example, rabbit horns, etc. Great Wisdom, rabbit horns are neither existent nor non-existent, yet expression exists. The meaning you speak of will decline. Great Wisdom, not all Buddha-fields teach the Dharma through expression. Why is that? In some Buddha-fields, not blinking the eyes and without verbal expression is called teaching the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, showing signs is called explaining the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, the sign of moving the eyebrows is called explaining the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, flashing the eyes is called explaining the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, smiling is called explaining the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, opening the mouth is called explaining the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, shaking a bell is called explaining the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, remembering is called explaining the Dharma. In some Buddha-fields, moving the body is called explaining the Dharma." Thus he spoke. If combined with the Sutra Taught by Vimalakirti, etc., then all actions that benefit beings in various ways are called teaching the Dharma. Therefore, in that very Sutra it says that some perform the deeds of the Buddha with rays of light. Similarly, some with space, etc. Some with sound and verbal expression and letters perform the deeds of the Buddha. In some Buddha-fields, there is great peace, without words or expression, without teaching, without discrimination, without fabrication, and the unconditioned performs the deeds of the Buddha. Similarly, Ananda, all the conduct and movements of the Buddhas, there is nothing that is not the deed of the Buddha. Thus he spoke. The details are in that very Sutra.
