Thus it arises. Thus, since the teachers of the Dharma have become different, and also the Tathagatas, through skillful means, tame with their respective fields, and benefit in various different ways, this is called the activity of the Buddha. Therefore, the Tathagatas do not contradict each other. As shown above, do those Dharma teachers have names, etc.? It is not certain, because in each field, the Dharma teachers also generate knowledge of space, etc. From the perspective of teaching the Dharma, there are no names, etc., because for unconditioned dharmas, there is no temporary state. There is no speech, no instruction, etc., completely peaceful, for the unspoken mind, it is merely speculation, even if names, etc. are established, there is no contradiction, because for conditioned mind, etc., there is a temporary state. Second chapter. Among them, the third, by distinguishing the accumulation, showing the difference of mind, also as the teacher Asanga said in the commentary on the Compendium of Mahayana, "Because it is threaded and connected, it is called Sutra." Here, following the eight times, for the listener's consciousness, the explanations of straight and not straight, etc., are accumulated, and what is distinguished, that is called nature. The so-called eight times, there are also two explanations. Some say that the eight times are the eight sounds of transformation, like this, on top of the seven sounds of transformation, adding the sound of calling, such as saying a person. The eight sounds of transformation will be distinguished below, like this, when the Tathagatas teach the Dharma, they speak any one of the eight transformations, therefore it is called following the eight times. Some rely on the explanation of grammar, each day and night has four times, adding them together, it becomes eight times, the Tathagatas also teach the Dharma, following any one of these eight times, therefore it is called following the eight times. Among them, the so-called straight and not straight explanation, there are also three ways.

Thus it is declared. Furthermore, some say that because it speaks of its own nature, it is called a straightforward declaration. Because it speaks of distinctions, it is called a non-straightforward declaration. Some say that the phrases are a straightforward declaration, while the verses are a non-straightforward declaration. Furthermore, some say that among the twelve categories of scriptures, the Sutra Pitaka is called a straightforward declaration, while the other eleven are non-straightforward declarations. Those who say this mean that, following the eight times, whatever accumulates and differentiates the names, letters, phrases, and verses of the twelve categories of scriptures in the consciousness of the listener, that reveals the nature of the teachings. What is the consciousness of the listener like? Why is it said to accumulate and differentiate? If it is combined with the Yogachara Bhumi, then temporarily relying on the six aggregates of consciousness, it makes distinctions among the five types of consciousness. Therefore, in that treatise, it is also said that when eye consciousness arises, it is conditioned by the three minds of arising from proximity, seeking, and determining. Among them, the first is eye consciousness itself, and the second is mind consciousness. In that determining mind, one looks forward to defilement and purification. After that, the similar eye consciousness can also arise as good or bad, not by the power of its own discrimination. As long as that mind does not turn elsewhere, both that mind consciousness and eye consciousness can continuously engage in good or defilement without interruption. When eye consciousness arises, just as it is, it should be understood in the same way up to body consciousness. Among the five consciousnesses, the first and the last possess six aspects, while the middle three are only mind. Furthermore, the first three are neutral, while the last two can also turn into good or bad. Furthermore, after the five consciousnesses arising from proximity, there must be a seeking mind. The seeking mind...

Below that, it becomes either a state of distraction or non-distraction. Below that, the five consciousnesses arising from close abiding occur. If it is not distracted, then it arises from the third, the mind of ascertainment, up to conformity. Furthermore, the arising from the close abiding of the mind consciousness is of two types: the mind consciousness arising from the close abiding simultaneous with the five consciousnesses, and the mind that arises from the close abiding of the mind alone, as it is said. Therefore, in the Yogācārabhūmi, it is said that for an object that is effortless, distracted, and unfamiliar, there is no arising of desire and so forth. This mind consciousness should be said to arise from close abiding, as it only focuses on the past. The searching or determining mind that arises after the five aggregates of consciousness, if its object is its focus, then it should be said to be only the present object. If it arises focusing on that very object, then the commentaries explain it in four ways. Some say that the mind consciousness turns by its own nature and does not rely on the order of the first three minds, which is called distraction. When focusing on an object that is not a strong condition and is unfamiliar, then there are five omnipresent [mental factors], but there is no determination of the five in separate objects. At that time, this mind consciousness should be said to be the mind arising from close abiding. Focusing on a past object previously experienced, and it is said to be the mind consciousness arising after the five aggregates of consciousness, and whatever the searching mind or determining mind is, those should be said to only focus on the manifest object of the aspect of the previous five aggregates of consciousness. Whatever the searching one and the determining mind are, it is said that they arise focusing on the object of the aspect of those five aggregates of consciousness. The explanations of the other three teachers are as they arise from the teaching of the five minds. Here, for the time being, connect with the five minds, the meaning of accumulation.
