From the perspective of the absence of the aggregates of taking, it is called non-duality, because it does not arise from karma and afflictions. It is also not appropriate to call it conditioned, because it appears and does not appear as desired, so it is said that it is also not appropriate to call it unconditioned. When combined with the 'Compendium of the Great Vehicle,' it shows five characteristics of the Dharmakaya: the characteristic of transformation, the characteristic of white Dharma, the characteristic of non-duality, the characteristic of imputation, and the characteristic of inconceivability. Third, the characteristic of non-duality is shown in three ways: the characteristic of existence and non-existence, the characteristic of non-duality of conditioned and unconditioned, and the characteristic of non-duality of one and different. Among them, the characteristic of non-duality of conditioned and unconditioned is because it is not made by karma and afflictions, and because it has the power to universally show the characteristic of appearing conditioned. What is said here is that the conditioned of the thoroughly conceptualized arising and ceasing, etc., is also, and the unconditioned of the thoroughly conceptualized arising and ceasing, etc., is also not, therefore it is said that it is neither conditioned nor unconditioned. The nature of unspeakable and non-duality is this very thing, because it is Suchness. Therefore, in the 'Sutra of the Teaching of the Supreme Abode of the Noble Ones,' it says: The Tathagatagarbha has five qualities, namely, the characteristic of being unspeakable, the characteristic of non-duality, the characteristic of transcending all discriminations, the characteristic of one and different, and the characteristic of being of one taste in all. Furthermore, it is said in the same sutra that the essence of all Dharmas will not be liberated, therefore it is called Suchness. Because there is no perversion, it is called the true limit. Because all characteristics have been truly transcended, it is called peace. Because it is the object of practice of the noble ones, which is non-discriminating, it is called ultimate meaning. Ananda, this Tathagatagarbha is neither existent nor non-existent.

It is not entirely defiled by afflictions, nor is it entirely purified; rather, it is naturally pure, so it is said. In this very sutra, it is also said below: 'The Buddha speaks of the meaning of the inexpressible and non-dual, which is so profound that it is not the realm of children.' Therefore, it should be understood that the inexpressible is the very nature of Suchness. If that is the case, how can the meaning stated in the Great Chapter of the Prajñāpāramitā be justified? Therefore, in that very sutra, Subhūti asked the Blessed One: 'Blessed One, what is the nature of existence?' The Blessed One replied: 'Duality is the nature of existence; non-duality is the nature of non-existence.' In the commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā, it is also said: 'The nature of duality is the characteristic of being separate and distinct; the nature of non-duality is the characteristic of showing oneness, that is, the oneness of emptiness, which destroys the characteristic of being separate and distinct.' Furthermore, in the Great Chapter of the Prajñāpāramitā, it is said: 'The equality of all dharmas is like this: without characteristics.' Subhūti asked: 'Blessed One, is the equality of dharmas conditioned or unconditioned?' The Blessed One replied: 'It is neither a conditioned dharma nor an unconditioned dharma. Why? Because apart from conditioned dharmas, unconditioned dharmas are not found; and apart from unconditioned dharmas, conditioned dharmas are not found. Subhūti, the very nature of conditioned and unconditioned dharmas is neither combined nor separated, without form, without shape, of one characteristic, that is, without signs.' This is also said by the Buddhas for the sake of conventional truth, not for the sake of ultimate truth, as detailed in that very sutra. This ultimate truth is the very nature of Suchness. Saying 'non-existent' is said to eliminate completely imputed phenomena, but in the true meaning, it is not truly non-existent.
