Among the places of practice, a one-birth connection is like this: at the end of this life, one will manifest unexcelled, perfect enlightenment. The last existence is like this: in this life, one will manifest perfect, unexcelled enlightenment. This is stated in the scriptures. The commentary also teaches similarly. Regarding the body of gods and others being called a one-birth connection, there are three explanations in past traditions. Some say that the body of a god is called a one-birth connection because the human body encompasses all bodies. Some say that the human body is called a one-birth connection because one attains enlightenment after taking a human birth again. Some say that one is called a one-birth connection from the collection of divine bodies. It is like saying that one has entered the stream of seven rebirths, etc., because two rebirths are combined into one. If the body of a god is called a one-birth connection, how should we interpret the explanation in the commentary on the Perfection of Wisdom? Therefore, it says that the bodhisattva of the third rebirth is only in Tushita. If asked, the true meaning of the third rebirth is like this: a human birth, a divine birth, and the final existence. Saying that the divine body is the third rebirth is because it is one among the three, so it is called the third rebirth. Since the human body has already been taken, and the final body will manifest enlightenment, therefore, the human birth and the final existence are not called the third rebirth. Does a one-birth connected bodhisattva have birth and death? If there is birth and death, why does the Treasury of Knowledge say: the gods of Tushita are one-birth connected and are the final body, so they will certainly not die in the intermediate state. The teacher in the Commentary on Truth says: in the heavenly realm of Tushita, there is birth and death, but there is no death in the intermediate state, because one dies only after four thousand years have passed. The noble Maitreya will pass away from this time.

At the end of the ninth kalpa of the Bhadrakalpa, when the lifespan is one hundred years, he will be born in Tushita Heaven. In the tenth kalpa of the Bhadrakalpa, when the lifespan begins to decrease from eighty thousand years, he will first be born here. Calculating, at half a kalpa, the lifespan is eighty thousand years, because there are many births and deaths. Furthermore, the Sarvastivadins believe that there are five hundred bodhisattvas there. The Sammitiya school believes that there are a thousand bodhisattvas in the heavenly realm, and they gradually attain Buddhahood. All of these are called Ekajatipratibaddha bodhisattvas, because they experience many births and deaths. Calling them Ekajatipratibaddha is because they each only have one rebirth in the human realm. The so-called Ekajatipratibaddha does not mean that there is only one rebirth in the heavenly realm. The five hundred bodhisattvas, etc., even if this kalpa has formation, abiding, destruction, and emptiness, those born in the heavenly realm will never be born in this Jambudvipa. Only when the Buddha appears in the world will they come to this Jambudvipa through miraculous power. If the gods of Tushita Heaven experience many rebirths, how should we understand the explanation in the Commentary on the Prajnaparamita? Therefore, the commentary says that the lower gods have short lifespans and their lifespans are exhausted before the Buddha appears. The upper gods have long lifespans and their lifespans are exhausted after the Buddha's Nirvana. The gods of Tushita Heaven are neither long-lived nor short-lived. When the Buddha appears in the world, they can directly meet him, so the Ekajatipratibaddha bodhisattvas are always reborn there. If the Mahavibhasa also has a similar statement, then the lifespans of the gods of Tushita Heaven and the Ekajatipratibaddha bodhisattvas are all the same. Therefore, when they finally die and transmigrate, they are born in the human realm at the same time and can see the Buddha, so it is said that they are neither long-lived nor short-lived. Other gods are not like this, so there is no contradiction between them. It is reasonable to say that Bodhisattva Maitreya is an Ekajatipratibaddha.
