Having attained the wisdom of selflessness in these (grounds), the co-emergent self-grasping present in the consciousness of mind is abandoned. However, the extremely subtle afflictions of the afflicted mind, and the remaining afflictions to be abandoned by the cultivation of the consciousness of mind, are not yet abandoned. This is also not a permanent cessation achieved through suppression, but rather it means that it is not permanently severed. Upon reaching the seventh ground, at the time of the vajra-like mind, it is initially abandoned all at once, because the seeds are destroyed through cultivation. The so-called "conquering all the hosts of Mara" refers to, in the fifth ground, cultivating the equality of the four noble truths, thereby conquering the hosts of Mara who grasp samsara and nirvana as distinct entities. The so-called "being far removed from all the mental activities of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas" refers to, in the sixth ground, cultivating the equality of both the afflicted and purified aspects of the twelve links of dependent origination, thereby completely abandoning the mental activities and conceptualizations of the two lower vehicles, which involve extreme weariness with samsara and attraction to nirvana. The so-called "being shown by the joy and bliss of the taste of the vast Dharma" refers to, in the seventh ground, realizing the meaning of signlessness, generating supreme conduct from the wisdom of emptiness, and thereby experiencing the joy of the great Dharma. The so-called "completely transcending the five fears" refers to, in the eighth ground, all afflictions not being manifest, and because of being separated from the causes of the five fears, it is said to be completely transcending the five fears, while the results of the five fears are abandoned upon attaining the first ground. The so-called "becoming one who has gone to the irreversible ground" refers to, in the ninth ground, definitely perfecting the various practices of the bodhisattvas of the ten grounds, becoming one who has gone to the irreversible ground. The so-called "all sentient beings" and so forth, refers to, in the tenth ground, obtaining the great Dharmakaya, generating clouds of great compassion, and raining down the great rain of Dharma, thereby pacifying the objects tormented by the suffering of all sentient beings.

Thus it is. The teachings explained above in conjunction with the ten times have been expounded. From here on, the ten phrases of the sutra will be elucidated in conjunction with the ten perfections and the ten aspirations. Therefore, in the Commentary on the Buddha Land Sutra, it is said: "Furthermore, in this way, these ten phrases of the sutra should also be explained in conjunction with the ten perfections, the ten great aspirations, and so on. Because in the first ground and even in each ground, all the practices of all the grounds are fully included, without exception." The ten perfections will be extensively explained below when the sutra speaks of the perfections. As for the ten great aspirations, they should be understood as explained in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, the Sutra on Good Precepts, the Samgrahavastu, and the Commentary on the Ten Grounds Sutra. For example: Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, who truly explains the profound meaning; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, who universally inquires in accordance with reality; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the noble Dharma; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, whose wisdom is extremely pure; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, vast wisdom; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the source of qualities; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, the ultimate truth, the true noble one; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, Avalokitesvara; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, Maitreya; Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, Manjushri, and so on, these are the main ones. Therefore, the third, "naming based on the principal ones," has been clarified. Here, in brief, the meaning is explained in three ways: explaining the names separately, explaining the necessity of stating these names, and using questions and answers to separately explain the attainment possible in one lifetime. Among these, explaining the names separately is again divided into two types: general and specific. Among these, the general name is as stated in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra: "The names of Bodhisattvas are without distinction; these should all be understood as being named from qualities. For example, Bodhisattva-Mahasattva" to the sixteenth, "endowed with Dharma," as explained.
