All are called "great" because they are Shravakas with extremely sharp faculties and have reached the other shore. Furthermore, they are called "great" because they abide in the state of the fruit of non-learning. In the true sense, all are Shravakas of uncertain lineage, and they are called "great" because they attain small fruits and then strive for great Bodhi. Or, they are called "great" because they have a large retinue, just like the many retinues of the present. In the notes made by the teacher Yangdag Dhenpa, it says: "The term 'great' has three meanings. The first is numerous, like saying 'a great army,' it is called 'great' because of its large number. The second is large in size, like saying 'precious jewel,' it is not called 'great' because of its large number, but because the size of its shape is tall and wide. The third is great because of being supreme, like saying 'great king,' it does not refer to a large number or a tall and wide shape, but it is called 'great' because of its supreme qualities. The Shravakas are also the same, they are not just one, so it is called a great number. Having turned their minds to seek the fruit of Buddhahood and practice the path of Bodhi, becoming extremely tall and incomparable, this is the most supreme great. Being vast and unfathomable, unable to be measured, this is called immeasurable." Thus it is said. The term Shravaka, in the treatise that establishes its very nature, it is said that it is called Shravaka because it understands by hearing the Dharma. In the explanation of the Buddha-bhumi Sutra, it says: "It is called Shravaka because it enters the noble path by hearing the sound of the Buddha's words." Furthermore, in the Yogacarabhumi-sastra, it says: "From other places, hearing the sound of the words of the correct Dharma, and from other places, causing the sound of the correct Dharma to be heard, therefore it is called Shravaka." Thus it is said. The extensive explanation of the term Shravaka should be understood as it appears in the explanation of the Buddha-bhumi Sutra, the explanation of the Dasabhumi Sutra, the Sutra of the Prajnaparamita, and the Mahasamghata Sutra, and so on.

The term "Sangha" is derived from the Sanskrit word "samgha," meaning "harmonious assembly." Because both the meaning and the entities are in harmony, it is called "Sangha." In the commentary on the Buddhabhumi Sutra, it is said that all are ordained Sangha, therefore it is called "Sangha." In the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, it says that many monks gather together and are in harmony, and this is called "Sangha." The detailed explanation is as described in that treatise. The phrase "all are extremely gentle," etc., indicates the second quality, which is the extensive explanation of qualities. Here, because there are thirteen qualities, it is divided into thirteen aspects. This shows the first quality, which is the quality of being extremely gentle. Here also, in the commentary on the Buddhabhumi Sutra, there are three explanations. Therefore, in that treatise, it says, "All are extremely gentle," some say that those who are in training, seeing the afflictions to be abandoned, that is, the one hundred and twelve forms of pervasively conceived negative views, are separated from their forms, and are not like untamed wild horses, so they are called extremely gentle. Some say that those who are beyond learning, seeing and meditating on the one hundred and twenty-eight forms of afflictions to be abandoned, are separated from their forms, and are not like the untamed, but like refined gold, so they are called gentle. For the sake of the true meaning, all are lineages that are completely dedicated to great Bodhi, so all are inclined towards the great fruit, and transform like the mind of the Tathagata, like a trained elephant, so they are called extremely gentle. The extensive explanation of being extremely gentle should be understood as it appears in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita. The term "Buddha's son" indicates the second quality, which is the quality of continuing the Buddha's lineage. The term "Buddha's son" is also shown in three ways. First, it is said to be the Buddha's son in terms of the Shravakas, as mentioned in this sutra and in the sutras spoken by the Buddha, etc. In the commentary by Acharya Near Light, it says that by the power of the Tathagata's teachings, it arises from the noble path.
