The four doors are distinguishing between existence and non-existence, explaining the order of before and after, showing the temporary and the permanent, and showing the presence or absence of other retinues. Among these, distinguishing between existence and non-existence has four modes: the first is that only the inferior is mentioned in the sutras and so on, and the great is not mentioned, as explained in the "Noble Diamond Cutter Sutra" and the "Long Agama Sutra" and so on. The second is that only the great is mentioned, and the inferior is not mentioned, such as the "Noble Buddha Avatamsaka Sutra" and the "Hundred and Fifty Verses of Praise Sutra" and so on. The third is that both the great and the small are mentioned, such as the "Noble Lotus Sutra of the Wonderful Dharma" and the "Vimalakirti Nirdesa Sutra" and so on. The fourth is that neither the great nor the small are mentioned, such as the "Noble Garland Sutra" and so on. If there are four modes, then how should we understand and explain what appears in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita? Because it says that in the Vinaya Pitaka of the Shravakas, only the Shravakas are mentioned, and in the Vinaya Pitaka of the Bodhisattvas, both the Shravakas and the retinue of Bodhisattvas are fully mentioned. If you ask this, there are two explanations for this: Some say that, in terms of the true meaning, it is just as explained in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, and that the four modes are mentioned because the intentions of the sutras differ. Some say that, in terms of the true meaning, it is indeed the case that all four modes are fully mentioned, because in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, in order to show the difference between the superior and inferior of the two pitakas, two modes are temporarily shown, and the previous transmission explained that it is because of true existence and non-existence, or because of extensive and concise explanations. The explanation of the order of before and after is also uncertain, because in some sutras the great is mentioned first, and then the inferior is mentioned later, such as the "Noble Sutra on the Five Degenerations." In some sutras, the inferior is mentioned first, and then the great is mentioned later, such as this very sutra and so on. If this is the case, then why do the commentaries on the Buddha-bhumi and the Prajnaparamita mention the Shravakas first?

If asked how to explain it, it is said in the commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā: "The Buddha's Dharma has two aspects: the very secret and the one to be taught." Like this, from the perspective of what should be taught, the Śrāvakas were mentioned earlier, because they have abandoned their afflictions and have nothing remaining. From the perspective of the very secret, the Bodhisattvas were mentioned earlier, because they have obtained the forbearance of non-arising dharmas and have abandoned their afflictions. Therefore, the two Sutras each proceed from the perspective of one meaning, so there is no contradiction between them. The Śrāvakas mentioned earlier are also mentioned in the commentary on the Buddhahood Sutra: "Because there are eight meanings." In order to completely eliminate the doubts of those who doubt the Mahāyāna, in order to make the Bodhisattvas of uncertain lineage generate definite joy, in order to make the completely pure great Śrāvakas abandon the arrogance of thinking "Our body is a monk," in addition, the Śrāvakas always serve the Tathāgata, because their attire is the same, because they are internal retinues, in order to make the Bodhisattvas generate respect for the Śrāvaka retinue, and also in order to make others generate great joy for the Śrāvaka retinue. In the commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā, it is shown through names. Therefore, from there it is said that if counting from high to low, then the Bodhisattva should be mentioned first. If counting from low to high, then the female lay practitioner should be mentioned first. Why are the Bodhisattvas mentioned after first showing the four types of Śrāvaka retinues? The answer is: Although the Bodhisattva's wisdom is vast, the Buddha taught it later, because their afflictions have not yet been exhausted, so they are placed later. Although the Arhats' wisdom is narrow, their afflictions have been exhausted, so they are placed earlier. Furthermore, Bodhisattvas use the power of skillful means to enjoy the five desires in the five realms and guide sentient beings. If Arhats did this, gods and humans would have doubts and find it strange. Therefore, it is shown later.
