It happened, and the details are as explained therein. Regarding the explanation of the temporary and the ultimate, this sutra, as mentioned earlier, is taught in two contexts for the sake of the true meaning: pure lands and impure lands. If this sutra speaks of pure lands, then the Bodhisattvas are ultimate, while the Two Vehicles are temporary. Therefore, in the *Yogācārabhūmi*, it says, "What kind of beings will not be born in a pure land?" The answer is, "Ordinary beings, the Two Vehicles, and Bodhisattvas before the bhūmis." Therefore, the Two Vehicles are emanations and not ultimate. If it speaks of impure lands, then the Two Vehicles are ultimate, while the Bodhisattvas are temporary, because they take on changing bodies and cannot be seen. Furthermore, those below the seventh bhūmi take on substantial bodies, and because they possess the meaning of a true body, there is no fault. In the commentary on the *Prajñāpāramitā*, it says, "Those below the seventh bhūmi have not yet abandoned bodies with worms and bodies of flesh." Regarding the explanation of whether or not there are other retinues, if it is considered from the perspective of impure lands, then there are also real nāgas and so forth. Therefore, in the commentary on the *Buddhabhūmi-sūtra*, it says, "In that assembled retinue, there are also other retinues, but the compilers have briefly explained two aspects because they are the most excellent." As it says in the sutra below, "The world with gods, humans, asuras, and so forth rejoiced and praised what the Blessed One had said." If one abides in a pure land, then there are emanated nāgas and so forth. Therefore, in the commentary on the *Buddhabhūmi-sūtra*, it says, "Even if they are emanations, there is no fault, because it is for the sake of adorning the maṇḍala where the Dharma is taught." Alternatively, they are emanations of the Buddhas or emanations of the Bodhisattvas. The commentary on the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha* by Master Vasubandhu and Asaṅga also explains this in the same way. Then

Moreover, the explanation of the meaning of words is also divided into two types: the teaching of the retinue of Śrāvakas and the teaching of the retinue of Bodhisattvas. The teaching of the retinue of Śrāvakas is also divided into three types: the first is enumeration and making various distinctions. The second is from "all also" onwards, extensively explaining various qualities. The third is from "the teaching of the Tathāgata" onwards, showing acting according to the teaching, which is enumeration and making distinctions. Like this, among the two types of retinue, in order to distinguish from the Bodhisattvas, therefore "Śrāvaka" is spoken. This is also shown through five ways: distinguishing dwelling in the same place, explaining immeasurable, explaining great, showing the meaning of Śrāvaka, and showing the meaning of Saṃgha. Among these, "same place" means that because the retinue and oneself are manifest, it is the meaning of being together with them. In the Great Chapter of the Prajñāpāramitā, it is said to be together with the great Saṃgha. In the Prajñāpāramitā Commentary, it says: the same dwelling place, the same time, the same mind, or the same view, the same path, the same liberation, this is called being together. The "same place" spoken of in this Sūtra has the same meaning. Among these, "immeasurable" means that in the explanation of the Upādhyāya Near Light, it says: its number is very large, because it is difficult to count, therefore it is called immeasurable. Among these, "great" means that in the Prajñāpāramitā Commentary, it says: because of three meanings: great, numerous, and supreme. Because of becoming the main one among the many, because of abandoning various obstacles, because of being highly respected by kings and others, therefore it is called great. Because the number is very large, therefore it is called numerous. Because of destroying the speech of the ninety-six heretics, therefore it is supreme. In the explanation of the Buddha-bhūmi, four types are shown: sharp faculties, no more learning, undetermined, and numerous retinue. Therefore, in that commentary itself, all
