Thus it is said, as it is said in the Sutra of the Noble King of Men, the name and sentences of this sutra were spoken by hundreds of thousands of Buddhas. Moreover, in the treatises established in the Mind-Only school, if the collection of names, sentences, and letters is not different from sound, then the objects of correct knowledge of the Dharma and definitive terms should also be without difference. Thus it is said, names and so on are their own nature. Some say that by gathering them into one, sound and name and so on are their own nature. As it is said in the Sutra of the King of Men, the twelve branches of scripture are gathered by name, sentence, letter, and sound, without impurity. And again, from that same source, sound, speech, words, and letters also perform the deeds of the Buddha. The Sutra Taught by the Noble Vimalakirti also says the same. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Sutra of the Noble Ten Bhumis, it says, "The speaker also speaks with these two things. The listener also listens with these two things." These two things are sound and name, and so on. Some show that gathering letters and meaning into one is the very nature. As it is said in the Yogacarabhumi, the body of the sutra is twofold in brief: letter and meaning. Among these, the letter is the support, and the meaning is what is supported. Thus, all these two aspects are objects to be fully known. Thus it is said, and it is also taught in the treatise on detailed explanation. Thus, from these scriptures that show differences from each other, what is taught by the teachers who possess the three baskets, in the true sense, is that the collection of names, sentences, and letters, sound, letters, and meaning, gathered into one, is called the very nature. Since the noble scriptures each focus on one meaning, there is no contradiction. Why is that? When these imputations are gathered into substance, then sound is the very nature. Because apart from sound, there are no names, sentences, and so on. Thus, when the very nature is gathered into the substance of action, then names and so on

Because (the four dharmas) become the self-nature, they can express the self-nature and differences of all dharmas, and are the basis of both. Names and entities are mutually dependent, so they are combined into one and called self-nature. If one aspect is missing, the statement cannot be established. Because the generation of perfect wisdom must rely on the power of letters and meanings to be accomplished, although many different points are made, there is no contradiction between them. Among them, showing that the two have and do not have self-nature and image also has two aspects: showing having and not having self-nature and image, and the difference in teaching the Dharma. Regarding having and not having self-nature and image, and the Dharma that is shown, the teachings spoken by the Tathagata take the four dharmas as their self-nature, namely the collection of sound, name, sentence, and letters. Thus, these four dharmas are the Tathagata's own self-nature, and what is perceived by the listener's consciousness is called the image. In short, the distinction between having and not having self-nature and image depends on their respective tenets, forming four different categories. The first category is having self-nature but not having image. On this, the statements of each school are not entirely the same. Temporarily based on the various schools, it can be divided into three statements. The first is the Sarvastivada, who say: All the words of all Buddhas are uniquely flawed. Names, etc., do not necessarily show the teachings. Detailed distinctions should be understood as they appear in treatises such as the Great Vibhasha. The second is the Mahasanghika, Ekavyavaharika, Lokottaravada, and Sammitiya schools, etc., who say: All Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, are transcendental and do not possess any flawed dharmas. The words of the Tathagatas are turning the wheel of Dharma. The Buddha speaks all dharmas with one sound. The third is the Bahushrutiya school, who say that the Buddha's words have five aspects.

is beyond the world. That is to say, suffering, emptiness, impermanence, selflessness, and nirvana are peaceful. This is to guide into the noble path. Other sounds are all called worldly. Like these schools, they all believe that there is only self-nature, not image. Because they do not show the meaning of mere consciousness from the scriptures. Secondly, those who believe that there is an image but no self-nature are the Nagarjuna school. They say that the Buddha only shows suchness and the wisdom of suchness, without coarse characteristics such as form and sound. The teacher Sthiramati and the Vajra school also explain it in this way. Thirdly, those who believe that there are both self-nature and image are the teacher Chandragarbha and Near Light, etc. They say that all Tathagatas have three bodies and possess qualities such as form and sound. In the "Noble Golden Light Sutra" it is also said that the Tathagata uses three kinds of Dharma wheels, that is to say, turning the wheel, realization, and holding. Like this, there are many logical scriptures. Or because the listener has fully understood, it appears as such. It should be known that there are both self-nature and image. Fourthly, those who believe that there is neither self-nature nor image are the teacher Arya, who relies on the ultimate truth and establishes that all dharmas are empty of self-nature. Or, the teacher Dharmapala said that there is neither self-nature nor image. Because the ultimate truth has no words, etc. Thus, although there are four different dharmas, Master Xuanzang and Dharmapala showed the meaning of the scriptures as two kinds. The first of these is to rely on the correct doctrine, only self-nature, not image. Self-nature is what the Tathagata
