When explaining the characteristics of earth dharmas in detail, most agree with those who claim that everything exists, that is, the Dharma can be summarized into seven hundred and sixty-one types. This is stated because the Sarvastivada school believes that there are seventy-five dharmas, and in the treatise "Explanation of the Ten Places," in order to establish that there are seven hundred non-associated formative dharmas, fourteen non-associated formative dharmas are taught. If the seven hundred non-associated formative dharmas are added, then the dharmas become seven hundred and sixty-one. Therefore, among the eleven forms of material phenomena, sound is the essence. Therefore, in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, it is said: Arhats who have attained the six supernormal cognitions, when the Tathagata teaches the Dharma, even if there is no gathering of listeners, they can see the Buddha with their divine eye and hear the Dharma with their divine ear. Where supernormal cognition cannot reach, one cannot see or hear. Therefore, the teachings of the Tathagata are characterized by sound. The second is the treatise taught by the noble Maitreya, which briefly states that there are one hundred dharmas, as stated in the "Treatise on the Hundred Dharmas." Regarding the nature of the Buddha's teachings, the statements in different scriptures are inconsistent. Some scriptures say that it is only sound, as stated in the "Vimalakirti Sutra" and other scriptures: The Buddha teaches the Dharma with one sound, and beings understand it individually according to their preferences. In addition, the same sutra also says that because the beings of this world are very difficult to tame, the Bhagavan also uses harsh words to tame them. Furthermore, the "Great Realm Sutra" says: The Tathagata teaches the Dharma with one sound, and proclaims immeasurable sutra treasuries like the ocean. In addition, the same sutra also says that the Tathagata's teachings are briefly of three types, namely the Sutra Pitaka, the Vinaya Pitaka, and the Matrika. Like this, there are many scriptures that can be used as arguments. Some scriptures consider names and so on to be the essence.
