Therefore, it is called "Great." Because the precious lotus (Padma-le-bgran) is the most excellent and special among lotuses, it is called the "King of Lotuses." The second explanation is, or the precious lotus, in relation to the roots of virtue arising from the Bodhisattvas, those lotuses (Padma-le-bgran) are the most excellent, hence it is called "Great." The Tathagata is the King of Dharma, and because the Tathagata arises from the most excellent root of virtue, it is called the "King of Lotuses." The third explanation is that the precious lotus is extremely difficult to obtain, therefore it is called "Great Jewel," and because it is the most excellent among lotuses, it is called the "King of Lotuses." It is said that because the lotus is not singular, or because it possesses lotus petals, consciousness is proclaimed. In the commentary composed by Master Vasubandhu, it is said that this single statement indicates the perfection of the basis. Just as the great earth and so forth rely and abide upon the mandala of wind and so forth, what then serves as the basis for this pure Buddha-field? It is said that it is established by the great king of precious lotuses, adorned with immeasurable collections of qualities. In the commentary by Master Asanga, it is said that this lotus (Padma-le-bgran) is the most excellent and special among lotuses, therefore it is called the "King of Precious Lotuses." Or, the Tathagata is called the "Great King," and this lotus (Padma-le-bgran) is the place of reliance for the Tathagata, and this name is given by the power of the master. "Establishment" means that the pure Buddha-field relies on this king of lotuses, constantly, continuously, and without interruption. This statement indicates reliance on the perfect basis. Furthermore, in the *Mahāyānasaṃgraha*, it is said that the enjoyment of the pure Buddha-field is extremely pure, extremely faultless, and extremely powerful. In the commentary on this, it is said that "extremely pure" means that there is no impurity and it is free from urine and feces. "Extremely blissful" means that there is no feeling of suffering and no feeling in between.

Because of this. Utterly faultless is because there is no unwholesome and unspecified. Utterly powerful is because it does not depend on external conditions, and merely generating the mind accomplishes all things. It is said in the sutra: The Bhagavan possesses extremely pure wisdom, etc., from before that, the arrangement of the place is explained separately, and from this point onwards, the second, the general and specific explanations of the qualities, are taught. Here, why is the place taught first, and the qualities taught later? In the commentary by the teacher Near Light, it is said: Because it is to show that the Bhagavan resides in the pure Buddha-field and possesses such qualities, this sutra is taught. Therefore, the separate explanation of qualities is also divided into two types: the general explanation of qualities and the specific explanation of qualities. What is the purpose of teaching these two qualities? The Commentary on the Buddha-bhumi Sutra says that it is for two purposes: to show that the Tathagatas are superior to other teachers, the special qualities of the Bhagavan are taught; and to generate great joy in others, the perfect qualities of the Tathagata are taught. In the commentary by the teacher Asanga, it is said: To show that the Bhagavan is superior to the wisdom of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas, the term "Bhagavan" shows that he is a person with qualities; and "possessing extremely pure wisdom" truly shows the superiority of the qualities. If the superior qualities are combined with the Commentary on the Buddha-bhumi Sutra, they can be explained in three meanings: because he possesses the wisdom to truly understand all that is to be understood, conditioned and unconditioned; because he possesses the wisdom to perfectly, completely, and truly understand all that is to be understood; and because he possesses the wisdom to truly understand all that exists as it is and all that exists. It is said in the sutra that it is divided into three explanations.
