Therefore, it is called food because it is the cause of manifestation. Just as defiled dharmas are obstacles to undefiled dharmas, yet because they completely grasp defiled dharmas, they are called food, so too are undefiled dharmas. Although defiled dharmas have been abandoned, why are they not food since they completely grasp undefiled dharmas? In that completely pure buddha-field, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas also enjoy and proclaim the joy of the taste of the undefiled Mahayana dharma that they have attained, thereby generating great joy. Furthermore, with the perfectly correct wisdom of self-nature, they bestow the taste of suchness and generate great joy, and because they completely grasp the body and do not decay, and to nourish virtuous dharmas, it is said to be called food. The teachers Vasubandhu and Asanga have not explained it in any other way. Moreover, in the Sutra of the White Lotus of the Sacred Dharma, it says: The beings of that field always abide by two kinds of food, namely the food of the joy of dharma and the food of the joy of meditation. In the commentary on that very sutra, it says: The food of the joy of dharma and meditation, there is no concept of any other food. It is said to abide in accomplishing all the benefit and happiness of sentient beings, which shows the eleventh kind of perfect activity. In the commentary made by the teacher Near Light, it says: Thus, there, he directly accomplishes all the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, or, all sentient beings themselves will accomplish all their own benefit and happiness. Among them, benefit refers to helping in this life. Happiness refers to helping in the next life. Furthermore, worldly refers to benefit. Transcending the world refers to happiness. Furthermore, being free from sin refers to benefit. Accumulating virtue refers to happiness. Furthermore, merit and qualities refer to benefit. Wisdom and prajna refer to happiness, and so on, these are different. Although abiding in extremely peaceful samadhi, due to the manifestation of previous practice and the power of aspiration, they act to accomplish the benefit of all sentient beings.

. The teachers Vasubandhu and Vimalamitra did not explain it in any other way. By the phrase "completely cleared away all afflictions, bonds, and stains," the twelfth accomplishment of benefit is shown. In the commentary on the Buddhahood Sutra, it is explained in three ways that "the stains of the bonds of afflictions are also distinguished in two ways." Therefore, in that very commentary, it says that those afflictions themselves are called bonds and stains. Or, afflictions are like this: the one hundred and twenty-eight root afflictions. Bonds are shamelessness and lack of embarrassment, and so on. Stains are flattery and deceit, and so on. Furthermore, obscurations of knowledge and latent tendencies are called afflictions. Their manifestation is called bonds and stains. Among them, the root afflictions are called bonds. The near afflictions are called stains. Thus, completely abandoning the bonds and stains of afflictions is called benefit. There are also three inconsistencies in this sutra's statement. In the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, it is stated from the source of the sutra's words as "harm," but it does not say "bonds and stains." Therefore, in that very treatise, it says, "completely cleared away all harm of afflictions." In this sutra, it says "bonds and stains," but the word "harm" is not mentioned. In the Buddhahood Sutra, both are mentioned. Therefore, in that very sutra, it says, "free from all harm, bonds, and stains of afflictions." The meaning of harm will be explained below when discussing the qualities of bodhisattvas. By the phrase "completely abandoned all demons," the thirteenth accomplishment of fearlessness is shown. Among them, the so-called all demons are the very ones previously mentioned above as the demons of afflictions, aggregates, death, and the sons of the gods. As the teacher Near Light says in the commentary, "Like this, these four things are called demons because they harm virtuous dharmas." This is like the distinction of abandoning the four demons.

If combined with the Sarvastivada and Mahayana scriptures, when one attains complete enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, one subdues the Mara of afflictions with the uninterrupted path. Entering nirvana without remainder, when entering the realm of nirvana, one subdues the Mara of the aggregates. Extending one's lifespan for three months is subduing the Mara of death. Abiding in the samadhi of loving-kindness is subduing the Mara of the sons of gods, as it is said. From the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, this statement is slightly different. Therefore, from that, it is said that abandoning all Maras is like this: being separated from the Mara of afflictions and aggregates, the Mara of death, and the Mara of the sons of gods. Among them, Bodhisattvas, in order to attain the path of nirvana, subdue the Mara of afflictions. In order to attain the body of the nature of Dharma, they subdue the Mara of the aggregates. In order to attain the body of the nature of the path and Dharma, they subdue the Mara of death. Because the mind is focused, in all places the mind is without attachment, and because one thoroughly enters from the unwavering samadhi, one subdues the Mara of the sons of gods of Paranirmita-vasavartin. Because they seize the life of wisdom and destroy the Dharma and qualities of the path, as well as the roots of virtue, they are called Maras, as it is said, extensively as it appears in that very text. If combined with the true meaning of the Mahayana, as stated in the commentary on the Buddha-bhumi, from the first bhumi onwards, the four gross Maras are abandoned. At the time of Buddhahood, they are completely abandoned, as it is said. If distinguished according to meaning, even up to abiding in the ten faiths, they are gradually completely abandoned in each bhumi, and should be applied accordingly. Surpassing all arrangements, the place of the Tathagata's arrangement is called, which shows the fourteenth place
