From the day the Tathagata attained complete enlightenment, Ananda became an attendant only after he was twenty years old. If he had not directly heard the previously spoken sutras, why does he say "Thus have I heard" in all the sutras? In the commentary on the Holy Sutra of Gratitude, three reasons are explained: hearing through transmission; knowing the Tathagata's worldly aspirations; and the Blessed One repeating and explaining. Therefore, it is said in that very text that if Ananda had not heard the Dharma spoken by the Blessed One for twelve years, why would he say "Thus have I heard"? It is said that the gods told Ananda. Or he heard it from the monks. Or because of the Blessed One's worldly aspirations, Ananda was able to know. Or Ananda requested the Blessed One to repeat all the Dharma spoken for twelve years for me. Or the Blessed One skillfully understood that from the words of the Dharma, immeasurable Dharma was spoken, and the immeasurable Dharma was summarized in one sentence of Dharma. The Blessed One spoke briefly, and Ananda fully understood it, because he was quick and intelligent, and had a strong memory. Furthermore, in the commentary on the Diamond Sutra and others, it is said that the monk Ananda obtained the samadhi called "King of Wisdom and Freedom of Dharma Nature." With the power of samadhi, he was able to remember all the previously spoken Dharmas, which was no different from hearing them directly. Just as those with clairvoyance can clearly understand past events, like Katyayana's son, with the power of knowledge, he can remember all the sutras spoken by the Tathagata. Ananda is also like that. If the Holy Ananda is a Shravaka, how can he hold the Mahayana sutras? In many sutras such as the Mahayana Dharma Collection Sutra, it is said that there are three types of Ananda. The first is Ananda, who holds the Shravaka Dharma. The second is the joyful one.

is the Good One, which is to uphold the Dharma of the Pratyekabuddhas. The third is the Joyful Ocean, which is to uphold the Dharma of the Mahayana, so it is said. In the commentary on the Noble Diamond Cutter Sutra by the ascetic Vajra, it also appears to be in accordance with this. In the commentary on the Diamond Cutter Sutra by the teacher Yangdag Denpa, it is said that among the three kinds of joy mentioned in the source of the sutra where King Ajatashatru confessed his sins, the third joy is to uphold the Mahayana sutras, so there is no contradiction. Among them, it is also called 'showing the intention of explaining those three.' In the commentary on the Buddha Bhumi Sutra, it is said that 'Thus I have heard' shows that it is free from the faults of adding or slandering other parts, and it should be known that it is completely abandoned. Thus, this Dharma was directly heard by me from the Bhagavan, and it was not transmitted from one to another. The listener has the ability, and what is heard also shows that it is free from the faults of adding or slandering other parts. The details are as described in that sutra. 'At one time' indicates the second of the five divisions, the time of occurrence. The teachers of this place also show that 'at one time' is of four types: the time when the Tathagata taught for fifty years in one long period, the time when one sutra was taught, the time when the wheel was fully ripened, and the time when teaching and listening met each other. The Indian teachers also have three different explanations. The first is that the teacher Pode Le'u Ji said, 'At one time' has many forms, such as the time of a moment, the time of day and night, the time of a hundred years, the time of all, and the time of spring, autumn, winter, and summer. Here, 'at one time' does not refer to such times, but to the time when the Tathagata fully taught this sutra. The second is what the teacher Naring said.

In Tibetan, the term "one time" also has two meanings. The first is the time of incompleteness, which is relative to the non-universality of the object. The second is the time of complete speech, which is relative to the universality of the object. From the initial realization of complete enlightenment to the final passing into nirvana under the twin Sala trees, the teachings were given in two forms, thus both the incomplete and the complete were spoken. For those who observe the Lesser Vehicle, it is called the time of incomplete teachings. For those who observe the complete aspect, it is called the time of complete teachings. Furthermore, there are three kinds of time: the time when substantial beings enter samsara, the time of inconceivable transformation, and the time that is merely imputed. The first two are the times of the two states of birth and death. The imputed time also has three aspects: the first two are the time of becoming knowable, the time of the destruction of wrong views, and the time of dwelling in the world. Among these, the time of becoming knowable refers to the fact that the Vinaya of the Tathagata (Sanskrit, Tathāgata, Devanagari: तथागत, Roman transliteration: tathāgata, literal meaning: Thus Gone) is allowed to be heard when one receives full ordination, but not allowed to be heard when one has not received full ordination; it is allowed to be heard when one is ordained, but not allowed to be heard when one is a householder; the king is allowed to hear it, but others are not allowed to hear it. The time of the destruction of wrong views is like this: the five Agamas and the nine branches of the Abhidharma, without distinguishing between the black and white aspects, are all allowed to be heard. The time of dwelling in the world is like when the Bhagavan (Sanskrit, Bhagavān, Devanagari: भगवान्, Roman transliteration: bhagavān, literal meaning: Blessed One) once dwelt on the banks of the Ganges River, or once dwelt in the terrifying grove. Here, the word "one time" is combined with the latter two. The third is that the teacher Yangdag Denpa said that the meaning of the word "time" has ten aspects. Details can be found in the Seven Matters Memorandum, but due to space limitations, they will not be repeated here. If combined with the treatises here, there are three explanations. The first of these is the Prajñāpāramitā Vajracchedikā commentary by the teacher Yönten Jin.
