Arya Nagarjuna's teachings are also of two types. The first is that one hears with the ear, not with the discriminating consciousness. As it is said in the commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā, "The gods see the Buddha with their divine eyes, and the gods hear the Dharma with their divine ears." The second is that one hears from the aggregation. As it is said in the commentary on the Prajñāpāramitā, although there are two explanations, the aggregation is correct, because it is explained separately for the sake of hearing the correct meaning, therefore it is said that one hears from the aggregation. This is how it is shown. If combined with the treatises of Arya Maitreya, there are three explanations. Some say that one hears with the ear, not with the discriminating consciousness. As it is said in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, "What is the characteristic of the ear element? It is hearing sounds." And as it is said in the Yogācārabhūmi, "One discerns sounds here, and because one discerns sounds here, it is the ear." Some say that one hears with the discriminating consciousness, not with the ear. As it is said in the Yogācārabhūmi, "Hearing is like this: hearing after listening." This is because the ear sense organ generates ear consciousness, and then one hears what is expressed by words. Furthermore, the commentary on the Buddhbhūmi says, "Hearing is like this: the ear sense organ generates consciousness and then one listens." In two treatises, it is said that one hears with the ear, not with the discriminating consciousness, and this is also because one has obtained the nature of the ear sense organ that generates discriminating consciousness. Some say that one is able to hear from the aggregation. As it is said in the Abhidharmasamuccaya, "Does the eye see form, or do the discriminating consciousness and so on see form? The eye does not see form, nor do the discriminating consciousness and so on, because all dharmas have no function. It is only because the aggregation exists that it is nominally established as existing, and it is called seeing. The ear and so on are also the same." In detail, it is as explained therein. Thus, different explanations have appeared in the treatises.

Furthermore, because of hearing sounds and becoming a special basis, it is said in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* that it is heard by the ear. Because it is mainly about distinguishing meanings, it is said in the *Buddhabhūmi-sūtra-śāstra* and others that it is heard by consciousness. Because there is nothing that can make things real in all dharmas, it is said in the *Prajñāpāramitā-śāstra* and the *Abhidharmasamuccaya* that it is heard. Because each is mainly about one meaning, there is no contradiction between them. Differentiating the act of hearing by reasoning with mere consciousness, the meaning spoken by two teachers appears in the *Buddhabhūmi-sūtra-śāstra*. The first of these says: By the compassion of the Tathāgata, past aspirations, and the power of potent causes, letters and meanings arise in the consciousness of the listener. Although the appearance of letters and meanings also arises from the power of one's own roots of virtue, it is said that the Buddha spoke because it is mainly due to potent causes. Because it appears from the sense organ of the ear and the transformation of one's own mind, it is said, "I have heard." The second says: By the listener's roots of virtue, great aspirations, and the power of potent causes, letters and meanings arise in the consciousness of the Tathāgata. The appearance of letters and meanings also arises from the roots of virtue of the Tathāgata benefiting others, so it is shown that the Buddha spoke. Although the listener's mind of consciousness receives and obtains it, it is said, "I have heard," mainly because it is presented clearly in the same way as that appearance. The two teachers said in the *Buddhabhūmi-sūtra-śāstra* that the first teacher, Nāgārjuna, does not believe that there are forms and sounds, etc., in the state of Buddhahood. The second teacher believes that even in the state of ultimate Buddhahood, it possesses forms and sounds, etc. The Dharma Master Xuanzang and Dharmapāla also explained it according to the correct later explanation, as explained above when explaining the existence or non-existence of essence and image.
