In the commentary on the Vajra Cutter Prajñāpāramitā that has been made, among them, The meaning of "Thus I have heard" is that this sutra was spoken by the Bhagavan with manifest wisdom, indicating that it was not made by myself. Third, in the commentary on the ground of the noble Buddha, it is explained in four ways. Among them, "Thus" refers to following the four meanings, for example, just like these words that are being spoken now, it is like what I have heard before. Quoting the scriptures is like this, saying to the retinue, "Like this, listen to what I have heard before." Determining the question is like this, some people ask, "Is the meaning you are saying in this way definitely what you have heard before?" Therefore, the answer is, "Like this, I have heard it." The answer of language is like this, at the time of correct collection, the Bodhisattva retinue requests, "As you have heard, please speak accordingly." The words given by the Bodhisattva Dharma heir to them are, it should be spoken accordingly, just as I have heard. Regarding these four meanings, three teachers say this, some combine with the last of the four, some combine with two, and some explain by combining with all four meanings. The details are as explained therein. Among them, the explanation of distinguishing "I have heard" is also that the Dharma heir Bodhisattva and Ānanda, etc., only nominally establish "I" on the body of the five aggregates, generate discriminating consciousness through the ear faculty, and say "I have heard" in order to listen to what is being said. Therefore, in the explanation of the Buddha's ground, "I" means that it is conventionally established on the five aggregates. "Heard" means that it is listening by generating discriminating consciousness through the ear faculty. Because of abandoning others and making it the general authority, it is said "I have heard." In the Buddha's Dharma, there is no person, no self.

If that is said, why is it said, "Thus have I heard"? The explanations of this meaning also differ. The treatise of the master Nagarjuna explains "Thus have I heard" based on the four tenets. The meaning of the four tenets is also as stated in the commentary on the Perfection of Wisdom: The first is the worldly tenet. Just as the aggregates manifest as a person, so too, "Thus have I heard" exists for the sake of the worldly, but does not exist for the sake of the ultimate. That is one explanation. The second is the tenet of individual persons. Having examined the conduct of each person's mind, when teaching the Dharma, some listen to one thing, and some do not listen. Therefore, for those who hold to annihilationism, there are sentient beings who connect, and for those who hold to eternalism, there is no person. That is one explanation. The third is the tenet of antidotes. Just as meditating on impurity is an antidote for those who engage in desire, but not for those who engage in hatred. The fourth is the tenet of the ultimate. Thus, the nature of things as they are is that the path of words is cut off, and the sphere of the mind is stopped. It is also said in verses: All is truly real, reality is also not real, all is not unreal is also not not unreal, that is the true nature of things. Furthermore, that same treatise also says that there are three worldly terms: namely, wrong views, pride, and names. Because it is the nature of both, it is called self. This shows that in the Yogacarabhumi Sutra, it is merely nominally established as self. The Madhyamaka treatise says that from the perspective of the nature of suchness, it is neither self nor non-self. If asked: Why does the commentary on the Perfection of Wisdom say that there is no self? There is no contradiction, for from the perspective of the worldly, it is said to be self, and from the perspective of the ultimate, it is said to be non-self. From the perspective of individual persons, it is self.

Or it is said to be non-self. In order to completely eliminate the two kinds of clinging, it is also shown that it is neither self nor non-self. Therefore, it is said in the "Verses on the Middle Way": "The Buddhas sometimes speak of self, and sometimes they also speak of non-self. For the true nature of all dharmas, it is neither non-self nor non-non-self." If one considers clinging to self, then it is said to be non-self, which is its only nature. If all clinging is completely eliminated, then it is shown that it is neither self nor non-self, which is its only nature. Because each meaning is considered separately, there is no contradiction. Combining with the "Great Nirvana Sutra," the true nature of self is its only nature. Combining with the treatises of Arya Maitreya, it is said that for four reasons, the self is merely a designation on the aggregates. Therefore, in the "Yogacarabhumi-sastra," the Blessed One said to the monks: "For four reasons, sentient beings should be known to be doubtful about conditioned things: to be comfortable with terminology, to be in harmony with the world, to dispel the fear that sentient beings think that all things are non-existent, and to create faith in oneself and others having qualities and faults through terminology." The treatises "Vibhasa" and "Abhidharma" also agree with this. Among them, the term "hearing" is not consistent in its explanations. The Sarvastivadins say that it is hearing with the ear, not with consciousness. The teacher Dharmapala says that it is hearing with consciousness, not with the ear, as explained in the thirteenth volume of the "Great Vibhasa." The Sutra school also says that it is hearing with consciousness, not with the ear, as explained in the "Tattvasiddhi-sastra." The Exemplar teacher says that it is hearing from the combination, as explained in the thirteenth volume of the "Great Vibhasa." Here, if combined with the teachings of the Great Vehicle, the Bodhisattva
