Those who are holders of the vessel should not, like ordinary people, drown in the ocean of sorrow. Since all conditioned dharmas are impermanent, why grieve? Furthermore, if the Blessed One entrusted the Dharma to you, now that you are afflicted by sorrow, it is as if you have lost a treasure that was rightly obtained. You should ask the Blessed One: After the Blessed One's Nirvana, how should I practice yoga? Who will be the teacher? How should a faithful one abide in hardship and discomfort? What kind of words should be placed at the beginning of the Sutras of the Tathagatas? When he said this, he also reported these matters to the Blessed One. The Blessed One said: Ananda, one should abide in the four mindfulnesses. Regard the Pratimoksha Sutra as the teacher. For a bhikkhu with faith, one should impose sanctions with words of brahmacharya. At the beginning of the Tathagata's Sutras, words such as 'Thus have I heard' should be placed. He said this. In the Dharma Samgiti Sutra and the Mahaparinirvana Sutra, the teachings are mostly in accordance with what is stated in the commentary on the Prajnaparamita, but due to the length, they are not elaborated here. In the Great Compassion Sutra, it is said that Ananda was entrusted by Nyer-bar Khor. Thus, although the statements in the Sutras and Shastras differ, it is because both persons were entrusted, and each relies on different meanings, so there is no contradiction between them. Explaining by classifying things, 'Thus have I heard' is heard from seven things, able to be heard, and the three things of not having personally heard the words of the Blessed One. From six meanings, there are the two things of being credible and the object of hearing. From five aspects, it is that all is heard by oneself. Although there are such three explanations, if combined with the explanation of the Buddha-bhumi, then the explanation of 'Thus have I heard' has three meanings, namely the general explanation of 'Thus have I heard'.

And, having heard it like this, explaining it separately, and showing the intention of these explanations. Among them, the so-called general explanation is like this: the transmission of the Buddha's teachings, such as the noble Manjushri and Ananda, etc., they say like this, these meanings of profound, etc., previously I heard it like this, thus it appears. The so-called separate explanation is also, previously it was said "like this," and later it will be explained separately as "I heard it." Among them, the so-called "like this," the respective explanations are not consistent. Therefore, the explanations of the teachers of this place, in short, have eight ways. Some of them rely on being consistent with trust to explain separately. Among them, the so-called "like this" is a word that is consistent with trust, and if there is trust, then it will follow the words and meanings; if there is following, then the path will be manifested in the manner of teacher and disciple. If the sutras are not trusted, they will not be transmitted, so "like this" is the way to establish words. Others explain by relying on letters and meanings. Among them, the letter will become "this," and the meaning will become "such." Like this, the letter becomes "this" because it speaks well, and the meaning becomes "such" because it is without fault. Others explain by relying on ultimate truth and conventional truth. Because ultimate truth and conventional truth are not inconsistent, it is said "this"; because conventional truth follows ultimate truth, it is said "such." Others explain by relying on disciples. Those spoken by the noble Ananda, etc., because they are the same as what the Buddha said, it is said "this," and to distinguish it from the similar suchness, it is said "such." Others explain by relying on the Tathagata. The noble Ananda, etc., repeat the Dharma spoken by the Buddha, those are no different from what the past Buddhas said, so it is shown as "this"; because the Tathagatas explain truthfully, it is correct, not wrong.

Therefore, in the subsequent words, it is said "Thus." Some explain based on the teacher and the disciple, wherein the word "Thus" is a term of merit and accordance. "This" is not accepted as being in accordance with the faculties, and "Thus" is established as a name because it is without fault. Like this, sentient beings without fault possess merit, and the Tathagata acts according to wishes, thus becoming compliant. Because the names of the lineage and the listener appear as possessing merit and being compliant, the word "Thus" is spoken. Some say that "Thus" is because I personally heard this sutra from the teacher, therefore it is said, "Thus have I heard." Some say that "Thus" is to indicate that this statement was spoken by the Tathagata, therefore "Thus" is spoken. The explanations of the Indian scholars, in brief, are of three types. The first is the notes made by the teacher Bodhi-le-u-ji on the commentary of the Diamond Sutra composed by the teacher Vajra-samadhi. If speaking from the conventional point of view, there are many ways of saying it, but here, summarized, there are four types: generating such Bodhicitta, advising others, simile, and definitive "Thus." Among these, generating such Bodhicitta is like thinking to oneself: I should generate Bodhicitta in this way and practice virtuous deeds. Advising others thus is like advising others to think: You should generate Bodhicitta in this way and practice excellent conduct. Simile thus, for example, saying: This person's radiance is extremely intense, like the light of the sun; wisdom is deep and vast, like the ocean; appearance is beautiful, like the full moon. Definitive "Thus" is like saying: I saw thus, I heard thus, and so on. Here, "Thus" is combined with the four, with the definitive "Thus," benefits Rabjor.
