Flowing like a river. It is not appropriate to be attached to the self. I have not shown this to children. As it is said, in another way of speaking, this sutra is spoken for the sake of the four castes, except for those without caste. Because below in the sutra, only the three vehicles of definite lineage and the one vehicle of indefinite lineage are shown. Furthermore, for the sake of those who are devoted to all vehicles, this third sutra of definitive meaning is spoken, or this sutra is also spoken for the sake of all five lineages, in order to allow all vehicle practitioners to experience differentiation. Although there are three such explanations, the second is the correct one. Fourth fascicle. From "Thus I have heard" onwards is the fourth explanation of the meaning of the words, which is also divided into two: the division of the sutra and the correct explanation of the meaning of the words. Among these, the division of the sutra is that there are two versions of this sutra. The first is the extensive version, which contains one hundred thousand shlokas. The second is the abbreviated version, which contains five thousand shlokas. Although there is only one abbreviated version of this sutra in India, there are four different versions due to different translations at different times. The first is during the Song dynasty, when the Indian Khenpo Guna-bhadra translated it under the name "The Sutra of Liberation through Combination," which has two volumes and is the last two chapters of the Sandhinirmochana Sutra. The second is during the later Li dynasty, when the Indian Khenpo Bodhiruci translated it under the name "The Sutra of Profound Liberation," which has eleven chapters and is the chapter on the exposition of the ultimate truth from the Sandhinirmochana Sutra, divided into four chapters, so it became eleven chapters, the rest being seven chapters. The third is during the Qin dynasty, when the Indian Khenpo Satyasiddhi translated the sutra under the name "Explanation of the Definitive Meaning of Words," which has one volume and four chapters, because the chapter on the exposition of the ultimate truth is divided into four, originating from the Sandhinirmochana Sutra.

This is the chapter on showing the ultimate truth of reality. The fourth is that during the Tang dynasty, the learned Tripitaka master Xuanzang translated the fifth volume of the "Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra" into one, which contains eight chapters. The reason why there are differences in the number of versions of this sutra is that in the "Definitive Explanation of Words and Sentences Sutra," only a part of the "Chapter on Showing the Ultimate Truth of Reality" appears, and the other seven chapters are incomplete. In the "Connecting and Differentiating Explanation Sutra," the last two chapters appear, and the other six chapters are incomplete. In the "Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra," all eight chapters are complete, and in the "Profound Differentiating Explanation Sutra," eleven chapters appear. Because the "Chapter on Showing the Ultimate Truth of Reality" is divided into four chapters, these two sutras are complete in words and meaning. If this sutra is the same as the original Indian version, why are there differences in names? Therefore, there are only the first two situations. Although there are three explanations, for the time being, we will explain based on the latter explanation. Among them, in the aspect of showing cause and condition, it can also be divided into two types: the aspect of making people believe and the aspect of initiating discussion. There are differences between these two aspects, and in short, there are three types. The first is the difference in names, such as: making people believe and the beginning of initiating discussion. It can also be said to be the beginning that is in accordance with the common beginning, such as: Thus have I heard, etc. Because it shows that it generates trust in others, it is called the beginning of making people believe. Because it appears in common in all sutras, it is called the common beginning. Because emitting light and so on initiates the true doctrine, it is called initiating discussion. Because the names are the same after each sutra, it is called the uncommon beginning. The second is the difference in time, the Tathagata initiating discussion is the beginning before the sutra. Ananda's request is the beginning after the sutra.
